A bit of help please, we're intermediates, middle aged, blues and reds. Hope to have a week away from Sat 4th Feb, ideally in a chocolate box small town , nice small to medium hotel close to the pistes. Our previous 2 trips we went to Bardonechia and loved it. We don't mind what country but reasonable drink prices etc would be preferred, and non smoking bars. I have noticed Linderau in Austria but looks a bit remote? and has button lifts? Any ideas would be great!!!

Don't the Austrians still smoke in bars?

Yes. The smoking isn't a huge issue, just prefer not.

Passo Tonale wouldn't be the worst choice, certainly not 'chocolate box' but not as monolithic as others, particularly the upper loop road (circumnavigazzione?)
Most of the hotels are H/B, and the drinks prices are generally ok, lots of HH deals. Fairly laid back apres (apart from that missable place at the base of the main slopes, you'll hear it before you see it), mostly welcoming Walsers.
Plenty of samey blues/reds on the main Tonale side, but more variety over by the glacier and running down into PdL where there's a good mix and virtually drag free (lifts are mostly quite modern/fast).

On the basis of Italy being a bit less crowded coming into the Euro school holidays, I'd say Sauze D Oulx would be a good choice. Quite good snow this season in comparison to others, original village albeit it amongst some newer buildings.
Many of the reviews hang on to a much older reputation that it had and should largely be ignored. It's a really good place to match your requirements with some of the best cruisey skiing you can find. Good food too, plus nice atmosphere if you stay out of a couple of rowdy bars.

Adelboden/Lenk? Drinks might be prohibitive, though.

Just FYI, if you're finding a lot of places booked via the TO's, Swiss resorts can be relatively easy for DIY - the tourist offices tend to be great, and fly/train/bus normally works well.

@Glenfish, £65 return Stansted - Salzburg with Ryanair for your dates opens a wealth of resorts such as Saalbach, Hinterglemm, Zell am See, Maria Alm and many more within an hour or so from Salzburg. All cruisy blue/red resorts with good snow conditions at present. Book a B&B/Pension/hotel through the local tourist offices and a minibus transfer from Holiday-Shuttle.at

You might consider Les Arcs 1950 - ski in / ski out and endless red and blue opportunities. It's car free and although a bit disneyesque worth considering. Having skied a fair few places in the last few years there isn't a perfect resort anywhere. Some places were prettier but skiing was more limited or less snow sure.

Corvara (or any of the other bases) in Alta Badia? Pretty village, even prettier scenery, loads of blues and reds incl. Sella Ronda...

Niederau is ok but not exactly memorable. Apres was decidedly lame for Austrian standards when we were there a few years ago. The skiing around Aufach was nice. If you're looking for loads of blues/reds, you'd be hard pushed to better Saalbach/Hinterglemm (in terms of Austria). Main apres bars are sub €5 a pint

@Glenfish, We will be in Pila then and loving it, though no way could a concrete jungle be considered pretty. Empty Pistes though and mostly easy wide Reds.
Have a look may suit you, We book through Carole on Pilaski.co.uk and just organise the flights she does the rest.
For chocolate box you need Austria I would say.

Dolomites! Great skiing for intermediates, great food and service.
I like Selva as I like a bit of apres ski and its great for accessing different parts of the ski area but not exactly "chocolate box" (well it is compared to the french mega resorts )

In Austria, Alpbach or Soll maybe? Ski bus rather than dead close to the pistes (certainly the former) but nice little villages, fair supply of nice and not too expensive restaurants and bars and a reasonable ski area to go at.
