DIY is often the way to go. You can find studio accommodation all over France for under £200 per week - granted that would need to be in low season.
Last January I stayed in really nice studio in La Chapelle d'Abondance for about £160, although the exchange rate was a lot better then.

@ediot, DIY is good, I've done trips to Les Carroz via GVA and Kaprun via SLZ, with mid week flights, used a transfer company to LC, and the train to Kaprun which was much cheaper.
I found accommodation on line, a small hotel in LC and a B+B in Kaprun paid about £40 for bb in each.
I ate out each evening which pushes price up.
I believe there are some good last minute deals with the major operators in chalets and chalet hotels where they need to fill the rooms, try ringing them later this week to see what they have to offer for this weekend as a guide to options, I'd be interested to know what they offer 😀

I'm on the verge with booking with The Ski Gathering, who offer chalet holidays to solo snow lovers, dunno if they're any good but I'll find out at the end of March!

low season and last minute. I nearly booked one for the week before Christmas . H/B in bad gastian . the day before it dropped to £408  that was with crystal inc flight and transfers.

Done it many, many times. DIY, using resort websites, especially in Austria and Switzerland where there are more, better value B&Bs and hotels with single availability. Transfer by train to resorts with railway stations also works out as good value.
