Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Top of 3 valleys after lifts close

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hey,

Is there any way getting to (or back down from) the top of the 3 valleys, after the lifts close? Looking to try and get some long exposure shots of the night sky whilst we're there in a couple of weeks, but other than camping it out, wondered if there was another way or if anyone has done this before.

Cheers

@cd360, They do regular skiddoo runs from Val Thorens in the evening. You might be able to tag in with one of the tours?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I've just seen that you're staying in StMDB... thats quite a distance. Still though, you may not find it too difficult to escape the light pollution. I wouldn't be camping up the top of the 3V's though... it's pretty cold! snowHead

Very Happy my thoughts exactly.

Just checked out the skiddoo runs videos and its around dusk time so it'll probably be too light. Also getting back to StMDB afterwards might be an issue.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Man up and get a big torch to ski back with. I saw people on New Year's Eve skiing down from restaurants and they were completely pissed (in the 3 valleys) There is an easy blue off Roc des Marches, which joins Violet, very easy green that goes into Les Menuires, and buses run till midnight down the hill. Skiing down to St.MDB is harder because of the trees.

Fair enough. First time there. Didn't know if they had any restrictions on skiiing after the lifts close or not.

@cd360, I am sure they do, its a covert operation you will be undertaking.

@cd360, I see on your other thread some of your party cannot ski. For the avoidance of doubt I do not recommend skiing down from the top of Roc Des Marches in the middle of the night using a torch to illuminate the piste.

Until you are at least level 3 on the skills chart.

@blahblahblah, the novices won't be doing anything other than the beginners area to begin with. Certainly not hurtling down past Val Thorens in pitch black. It's a solo mission

Like someone else said - this will have to be a covert operation, the piste patrol get very grumpy about people out on the piste after "lights out", although we do sometimes manage to hide somewhere with a cheeky beer after the lifts have stopped. Personally I wouldn't attempt to come down in the dark, too many possibilities of dying. I think it was last year there were notices up in Mottaret saying it was absolutely forbidden to be out on the pistes after the lifts had closed, even on ski tour gear.

When staying in La Tania we got chased off Bouc Blanc a couple of times by the same pistey until the day I was able to ski down to him with his collection of skis and poles he'd left spread out over a couple of hundred metres of piste in a spectacular wipeout. After that he left us alone with a cheery wave... Toofy Grin

is that a ref to buses going to and from Smb to Les Menuires ?

i am going to Les M in a month and was wondering if its easy to get about e.g. to VT or smb for an evening and get back to Les M ?

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

I'll see what quality pictures I can get at SmB level - it might be good enough. If not, I'll look at the bus option. Not looking for pissing off the piste patrols or risk getting my pass taken off me.
