Poster: A snowHead
|
Arrived Saturday, snowed all Sunday. Dull but clear Monday, still -10 deg C at top of Planai. No piste preparation so on most runs moguls are building. Skiing down into Hause Kibling seemed to take a lifetime but it is the best part of 1200m vertical. My first visit and am struck by the extent of the terrain. The fact that the bus from HK to Planai takes 20 min with 4 stops shows how compressed the piste map is. Interesting evening in the Tenne last night!!
If people are looking for somewhere last minute this would be a great choice.

We booked 8 months ago to stay in Rohrmoos, just up the hill. I knew we'd fine for snow come mid- February in Austria. The new snow showing on the webcams looks amazing. Thanks for your update. We can't wait.

ooo... we've got rooms available over that week too!
Maria's mexican off the high street is pretty decent.
Tenne has good Aprés (but that's about it).
Papa Joe's was also good us/mexican/austrian but I haven't been there for a couple of years now.

Seconded for Maria's Mexican, great food. Or for a bit of finer dining both traditional or with a modern take try Die Tischlerei.

Talbachschenke and the Campsite Restaurant are both excellent as is the Tauernalm at the bottom of the sledging run in Rohrmoos.

@tilly
Best Bars on the Mountain:
Almrausch (Planai) - Always a good laugh and busy
Onkel Willy's (Planai) - Good food and good fun later in the afternoon
Schhafalm (Planai) - Similar to above, live Austria music on Wed afternoons
Kessleralm (Planai) - Newly extended bar with great views half way up Planai
Knappl's Bergschlössl (Hauser Kaibling) - Great drinks and good bar staff, just off the back of the Number 9 run
Sautrogalm (Reiteralm) - Smallest cabin on the mountains, rustic and always busy, just of slope 1a
Bars in Town:
Tenne - Large Apres Bar
Cabalou - Quieter drink but good location and drinks available
Platzhirsch-Alm - Smaller Apres bar just at the bottom of Planet Planai, recently done up and looking good!
La Porta - Cocktail bar
New Wine Bar in town as well if thats what you like.
Any more questions do ask..

@tilly yes it will be very busy for the Monday and the Tuesday. Huge parties and stages in the centre of town, best to head to them on the eve before the race and then after the race its self, lots of pop up bars set up as well. As Ski Sunday say "The Night Race is 50,000 people who have had one too many!" But great fun...

Oh, the Panorama Alm hutte by the bottom of the Seppenjet at Reiterlm is one of my favourites. Proper home made food, good vegetarian choice... AND... my go to meal... Munchen Weisswurst sausage breakfast with pretzel and Weissbeer with a big helping of sweet senf mustard.
