Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Accommodation at short notice

I have committed to a date in March for some off piste action with flights (Geneva) and guide (roving) is already booked. Location is yet to be decided as we hope to leave late as possible to better determine where the best conditions might be. Has anyone does similar thing that could advise me of good tips or potential pit falls? Obviously don't want to leave it too late and end up with 'no room in the inn', so how much time would be not enough time?
Puzzled
Thanks in advance.

In many cases the tourist office acts as a clearing house for unsold accommodation. But I have only used them with a one or two day lead time. It might be different 2 weeks in advance, I suspect you will need to go direct to the accommodation providers.

Our chalet hosts recommended https://www.muchbetteradventures.com/ last year for this very thing. We checked them out and every week we get their last minute deals.

If your flights are after 4 March when the French school holidays end, and if you are flexible, you should be fine. Unless flights are Sat/Sat you'd probably have to leave it till last minute though. Two weeks prior they will be holding out for full week bookings.

@MacL, if you have a guide booked, it will be down to him (usually) to find the accom depending on where you end up. (Gites France / Locanda / Refuge Italy)

It's pretty standard practice.

We often in the past have moved from valley to valley after a few nights - all the fun of a road trip, and you'll probably end up staying in some super places away from the hordes.

I might be hooking up with a mate and a guide in a couple of weeks and as yet there are no plans as we're waiting to see where the best conditions will be.

@MacL, ironically just been copied in on email & whatsap from the guide and my mate which shows how the guide is thinking ahead etc......

Forecast 15/1 12 cm, 16/1 38 cm and 17/1 32 cm. Let's see how it goes, but could be great!

Lets meet on the 19th early in the morning. We can still talk some days before to see what conditions says? It is ok with you that way?

For accommodation it should not be any problem since it is not yet high season! I would also keep our plans open in order to see what conditions do?!

Though can't see where he's got that optimistic forecast from Puzzled

@Weathercam,

So you will be rocking up each night to a hotel or a chalet? What kind of price range could I expect from a 'comfortable hotel?

@MacL, like I said a Gite/chambres d'hôte or Locanda - and sharing a room 1/2 board circa €50 - though we could well end staying in the same place for five days if conditions are good - this was a few seasons ago
http://stylealtitude.com/val-maira-ski-touring.html

Last year we were in another valley and same sort or Locanda - obviously when touring you're able to go more "remote" but there's always somewhere the guide ends up finding for you if he's done his homework Toofy Grin

Anyway don't worry about the accom worry about the snow

And pack light you could be living out of a pack Toofy Grin
