Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Going here for the first time in March with 19 other people
The last detailed trip report I could find through the Search function was from 2013.
Could anyone who's been more recently advise on:
    Best place to rent skis. Looking for somewhere very close to the main lifts ideally with free ski storage (although I understand you can book lockers by the gondola)
    Best village bars for 40-somethings
    Child-friendly restaurants in the village
    Best slope-side restaurants
    what non-ski stuff is there to do

Ski hire - I'm not sure of the nearest place to the gondola. However I like the Twinner shop in the village. I tried and then bought skis from them a few years ago and the chap in charge is very friendly. More recently the children have had hire skis from Sport 2000 next to Les Airelles and they were not happy with them. I think there may also be a skiset at the foot of the Figaro piste but can't quite remember.

Child friendly restaurants - L'agora in the main square does pizza followed by good range of ice creams and my kids like it. However I have found mountain restaurants far more appealing in this resort and would suggest eating out up the mountain at lunch and doing your own fondue in the apartment in the evening.

Mountain restaurants - lots of good options - eg. L'Anfionne on Timalets, L'Igloo in Morillon and their sister restaurant Chalet D'Clair, a creperie towards the foot of the piste in Morillon 1100 - can't remember its name L'Bec maybe? The restaurant at the foot of the Molliets piste also has a good ambience.

Non ski stuff - we have always had access to pool and spa at our apartment so have not had time for much else. If you don't have a pool at your residence there is a new swimming pool in the village. Hopefully others can help with apres ski ideas. I've seen huskies in the molliets area so maybe husky rides are an option. Probably best to contact the tourist office for other ideas.

There are a couple of bars in the village but I'd rather drink a glass of wine in a cosy apartment than go to them. Toofy Grin

The Grand Massif ski area is fabulous especially the runs in Morillon and Les Carroz. I'm sure you will like it.

We visited for a weekend last season and I couldn't find any hire shops particularly close to the gondola, which is right at the top of the village, although others with more experience of the place might know better! I would really recommend booking lockers in the gondola station (which you can do online) to avoid carting skis up and down the hill, especially if you are going with children.

There's a ski rental place right next to the main gondola in Carroz, next door to a little hotel called Les Airelles.
The bar we usually use in town is the one next to the Marlow (itself a bar). It gets busy early and thins out later. Lots of locals.
Most of the restaurants are fine for kids I'd think.
Lunch wise we usually eat over at Flaine, either down in the bowl or up at the Blanchot. We only grab a bite and go but it's perfectly good grub.

If the OP google-maps 'Logis Hôtel les Airelles' s/he'll see there's Carroz Sports on one side and Skiset Le Strato on the other (have only used the former, nice people and very helpful - they melted and stretched one of my mates' boots to accomodate a very painful bunion which had been causing much hilarity to the rest of us but a lot of pain to him). The gondola is 50m away.

The Carroz Sports shop next to the Airelles hotel is about a 20 metre walk to a covered (300 ish metre long) travelator which takes you up to the gondola station.

It depends on which accommodation you are in but I suggest the easiest way of renting/transporting skis is to use a shop in village centre e.g. Mendy Sports or Interski (you can pre-book online for best prices), the Ligne A bus goes every 10mins or so at peak times for the 90 second ride up to the gondola station, where the (prebookable online) heated ski-lockers are located. The lockers easily take 4 sets of boots/skis/poles (possible to cram 5 or six sets in but only 4 sets of boots will be heated!).
As you are a group of 19, the most ideal bar would be MARLOW, followed by POINTE NOIR, both in village centre, other smaller bars in centre are CARPE DIEM & ST JACKS, I'm sure you will quickly find your favourite. After skiing, if you are leaving your skis etc. in gondola lockers, the TIRE FESSE bar about 50m walk towards village is small and has a terrace in the sun to commence your Apres-ski. The bars are not modern and sophisticated but are pleasant enough.
Les Carroz prides itself on being suitable for families, so all restaurants are child friendly, personal favourites are AGORA, LA SPATULE, IL PICCOLO, NEVE and OURS BLANC, all are in or v close to centre.
Mountain restaurants - close to Les Carroz - as mentioned above, IGLOO, CHALET D'CLAIR and L'BEU in Morillon area are very good and have lovely sunny terraces.
Other activities - Outdoor heated pool/gym/sauna/steam room complex. Huskey sledding. Snowmobiling. Outdoor ice rink. The local "Animations Team" and Tourist Office also organise other activities for kids and adults, see programmes online nearer the time of your hols.
See Tourist Office website for much more information.
To OP - where are you staying?
I really like Les Carroz and the Grand Massif ski area for its wide variety of slopes, I am sure you will all have a great time. Post any further specific questions if you would like any more info.

@snowymum, @LittleRos, @northernsoulboy, @skier52,
Wow thanks for all the responses and sorry for delay in replying - been away. I'm very excited about the trip and think we'll go for Carroz Sports. We're staying in a self-catered chalet at the top end of Route de Flaine and did consider Zig Zag to hire stuff but they don't have an online booking system which makes it hard to manage booking 20 sets of skis! Will also book the ski lockers at the main lifts. We're lucky to have our own pool at the chalet but it's great to have other options for the less "ski-y" people among us. With such a large group I don't think we'll be going out lots but great to have some apres options and plan to have one night where we eat out.
Any ideas about take-aways - do they have them in LC?
Cheers

Take-aways are mainly pizzas from a few restaurants, the ones from Il Piccolo and Agora are good, if you are going to order a lot of Pizzas then Agora is bigger and would cope better with 10+. There is also a "Delicatessen" in the centre, opposite the Casino supermarket, that sells fresh meat and many precooked dishes sold by the kilo for heating in microwave or oven e.g. Lasagne, dauphinois potatoes, boeuf bourguinon, tomate farcie, chickens, etc. etc. - not cheap but very tasty. For those shoppers that want a morning off skiing - every Tuesday morning there is a fairly large outdoor market in village centre, food, clothes, etc.

Can't help with takeaways but worth thinking about where you ski. Depending on the ability of your group, you could save a few quid by buying Carroz-only lift passes for the first day or two and Grand Massif passes (also Flaine, Samoens, Sixt etc) for the rest of the time. If the weather is bad, stay in Carroz, where there are some nice tree runs. Over the hill it's mostly wide open spaces.

Is that the place with the big rotisseries outside, which does chicken?

Hi Folks
My son turns 5 when we're out here in March. Is there anywhere local that would make a birthday cake if I spoke to them in advance? Sorry for weird non skiing question!

@Mountaindoc, If you are driving you would be better off taking a Colin the caterpillar cake from Marks. We asked if one of the Les Carroz restaurants could provide a birthday cake for our son last year and their suggestion was a blueberry tart Toofy Grin It might be possible to order something better from a local bakery but I cannot remember any names.

@Mountaindoc, try http://winter.lescarroz.com/services/1/115871-bakery-le-four-du-moulin.html

Alternatively, as you are in a catered chalet, why not take a baking tin, a packet of cake mix and ready-prepared fondant icing and make it on site.

Best mountain restaurant by far is La Luge, on the Dahu run going to Samoens from Tete des Saix.
It's almost as good as 8M des Monts in Samoens.
But get there early (12!) or book, especially Friday/Saturday as it's not big and fills quickly...

Honestly id think if in a chalet the chalet staff are your best bet for a victoria sandwich type cake, just pack candles and some premade icing topper things.

@simo1234, that's great news.
We are on Route de Flaine around 800m from the tourist office. I think Casino is our nearest super. Is it reasonable for buying fresh veg, mince, chicken etc? We're not driving so limited to where we buy food from. We are getting the chalet owner's management company to do a big shop for us just before we arrive but they won't be able to store it in a fridge so we can only get booze, pasta, rice etc from them. Cheers for any info

The Casino (about the size of a Sainsbury's local or Tesco's Metro) is good for vegetables and pretty reasonable for meat. Straight across the road from the Casino is a cracking butchers, that also sells preprepared meals (but quite pricey).

@Mountaindoc, Don't know if the tourist board still do it but 2 years ago they did a "get to know the area" ski guide type thing.
We booked before we arrived and double checked at the tourist board on arrival.
The guy we had was fantastic with info about lift times,links, queues, the best way to ski the area according to the sun, ski school time etc and what was going on in the village that week. He did go at a decent pace so not for the cautious but we were the only 3 English speakers in his group.

@Mountaindoc. La Spatule is open ok, we've been in there a few times this season and have booked tables for next week also. Same owners for years, it's well run and quite popular.
Deli seems to be open every day and til 7 or 8pm. I'll check any notices on door/in window and update you.

@skier52, that's great to hear. I've booked Agora and Petit Oignans for a couple of nights out. Have found out that Casino does a "click and collect" which will make getting provisions less painful (we arrive around 6ish on the Saturday so want to get ski gear sorted as well). I have booked lockers online but a warning - maybe I was being dim - but it wasn't very clear about the rental being a nightly charge, so I ended up buying a day more than I needed (what I was actually buying was the night after our last day of skiing). When I wrote back to them to ask for a refund they referred me to their T&Cs saying they would not refund the extra night. Not the end of the world but a bit frustrating and a waste of Euros. We have booked childrens lessons with ESI who have been really friendly. Very excited about the holiday now. Just need a tiny weeny bit more snow

La Spatule - not sure about closing time/last orders as we usually are leaving 9 to 9.30pm and a few are still finishing. In peak season they do have 2 sitting though, first one 7pm, presume 2nd sitting will be 9pm ish.
