Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Alternative to Falke Socks

Poster: A snowHead
I've been wearing Falke SK2 socks for a few years and although I'm pretty happy with them I find they compress quite a bit after a seasons wearing them (approx 60 days use). I'm ready to buy some more for this year but wondered if anyone has any recommendations for an alternative?

Another vote for Smartwool - and coincidentally they're cheap on SportPursuit atm.

As it's been a few years hopefully no-one will mind if I post a signup link that gives me credit: https://www.sportpursuit.com/join/Matt_Clark_63de4d

@897sma, If you liked the Falke socks, try their compression version.

I like my Falke socks (SK4s), Teko light are good too. I put my finger through a pair of socks when putting the on last season, I think they were Smartwool phd - they were from TKMaxx though.

I have some Smartwool ones, not sure exactly which weight they are but fairly light. Have been great and were on offer for around £8 each in TKMaxx a couple of years ago.

I have ordered some Ortovox Rock and Wool socks from Tim of Snow Sheppard and they are looking pretty good, apparently comparable with my SK4 socks

Sk2 is a 'Normal' thickness sock. An SK4 or Teko Light or Smartwool Phd Ultra Light socks are much thinner so IMO can't be offered up as a replacement.

For quite some time i've skied in SK4's and my only comment upon them would be to choose a size smaller so the sock is slightly taught when new, thus still fitting well ( avoiding 'rugging up') after some initial stretch.

Don't think i've ever worn a pair of SK4's out!

Can't speak about the Teko Light or Smartwool Phd Ultra Light, as I haven't tried them, but people say good things about them.

This - although I'm rather taken with the idea of "Recovery Socks"... do they work on hangovers? Do they work when recovering a MkII Escort from a ditch?

I really don't think socks are such a big issue. I possess some Falke, which were either bought in extremis, or were presents as they are too freaking expensive for words.

@under a new name, I don't agree, really important imo, cheap socks equals cold feet, baggy fit and boot issue ime. I've got a drawer full of old ski socks that I wear now for mountainbiking and throw them away when they get full of holes and beyond skiing use, theyre just washed out and no structure to them but good for mud bashing in the woods.

I only wear Falke SK4, Boots were molded whilst wearing SK4's and i try never to wear the same pair on consecutive days... works well for me. Happy feet incredibly important.

£6.99 ? http://www.decathlon.co.uk/warm-300-adult-ski-socks-grey-id_8368122.html

Or

£40 ? http://www.falke.com/uk_en/falke-sk-energizing-wool-men-skiing-socks-black-2586-3171?gclid=COPGxYnLxNACFfAV0wodsLkBTA&gclsrc=aw.ds

I think if a pair of socks is making that much difference, there are bigger problems to investigate. That said I do have a pair of Falke's that I can't wear cos they are too thick...

I bought 3 pairs of Falke SK4s in a sale in the summer. Last season I tried to ski in my race boots wearing a slightly thicker ski sock, about medium thicknesss. After an hour the pain got too much. They are foam injection liners though so very comfy with the correct socks but not a mm to spare.

@under a new name, the Falke SK4 socks i buy are £20 a pair (2015/16 season). To me, that £20 a pair is a consistent article that i can rely upon not to let me down during a ski day. I look at it this way, a days skiing during a holiday abroad is about £ 120 to £180 per day and i get at least 2 years out of a sock - for the assurance of quality, i'm not over doing it really.
i haven't yet needed the energizing or the merino wool socks - just the ordinary SK4 is fine for me... wink

@under a new name, each to their own, i'm with Tim on this - one, thing though the pointy bit on the pink unicorn might dig in a bit.

like what?....that your boots are a precise comfy fit with a thin, tight fitting sock, don't see much to worry about there, more to be concerned about with baggy thick ill-fitting socks with ridges and slack boots surely?

For touring I got some lovely Salomon compression socks. Much less issue with rubbing on heels and resulting blisters for longer tours.

I have used just about every type of ski sock over the years from Tubes years ago which were pretty rubbish,
Silk ones, Falke, Hemp socks but my favourites now and for the last couple of years are:
Helly Hansen Merino wool mix socks available from TK-Max at 2 pairs for £9.99
The TK Max ones are marked "Nursery" ... but I have never seen the GS or Slalom ones.

Actually I'm wearing them now.

I wore my Falke socks yesterday .. I have nothing else to do.

I forgot that they are foot specific, L & R .. I put one on the wrong foot at first.
And they have the size on the side as well.

But they are not as warm as the HH's and also my feet felt a bit sweaty by the evening, and I had not even been skiing!

They probably cost me about £20 as well.

Is the Smartwool PhD ultra similar to the Falke in having R and L? Doesn't seem on their picture...
I really love the Falke SK2, but a new higher end boot purchase makes we want a thinner sock... The price of the Smartwool is definitely attractive, but the Falke's been amazing...

I buy some smartwool phd ultralights whenever I see them on sale so normally pay about £10 a pair.
All I really need is a thin, tight fitting / non baggy sock that doesn't get too sweaty. Suspect I could find something cheaper but I know I'll be comfortable in those.

I've started wearing compression socks for running and I reckon they might also work well for skiing but they aren't cheaper.
