@PaulC1984, ...answer: punitive. Sometimes it hurts to press the green button on the credit card machine. New, depending on spec, between 2,399.00 and 4,499.00. But I managed to get a pre-owned but hardly-ridden one for just over 1.3K. It was one which was purchased for a partner of someone living in Cham who didn't use it. Result.

@PaulC1984, ...and due to a number of factors (the fact that the brakes on hire DH rigs on the Continent are the wrong way around (....ENDO!!!!!...), it's a pain always hiring, damage is an issue (deposit - 1000 chf, or worse, credit card number nnnnnnxnnnn chf), and basically I will build a bike whenever I can, any excuse....I will be building my 11 year old one of these:
http://www.commencal-store.co.uk/supreme-24-yellow-2016-c2x16198851
24 inch wheels! Excellent.
The frame will be under the Christmas tree, and the build will be through Spring.

@valais2, I know 11 year olds come in all shapes and sizes, how long do you think that'll last?

@hammerite, ...yes that was an issue. This frame, according to the Commencal website, will go from 130cm height to 150cm. Alex currently is a small 11 year old (he's on the 20th centile while his sister is on the 95 centile) and so is just under 140cm at present. He used a Norco 24 this year and that fitted well, with some room to grow. He has around 10cm to grow before he will grow out of this Commencal, which gives him 2-3 seasons on it. At that point we'll go to a supreme 26, take all the gubbins off this one (dropper post, forks (which are 520 RTA), and the rest) and sell the 24 frame, I think. That will give a cost of around 200-300 gbp per season max, which is fine I think. And in the meantime, it will simply be a fun bike to have around. He uses his 8kg hard tail 24 inch wheel XC bike brilliantly in single track and on downhills, so he will certainly thrash the +nb** out of the Commencal in the Alps.

@valais2, sounds a plan. When Jnr was 10 he was riding a small adults Giant MTB. That got passed over to my nephew who is still riding the bike (they're both 15 now and only 2 months difference between them). Meanwhile we had to toss up between getting Jnr a large or XL frame on his new bike as he is right on the cusp. Will be useful when he stops growing!

Sizing can be s nightmare for kids - long toptubes really help since you can do a lot of messing about with stems and seat position if you have the 'wriggle room' of a very long top tube.

@hammerite, .., goodness sounds like my daughter. She is now as tall as my partner and almost as tall as me, at 13. It's clear that a random cosmic ray blasting through a day-old embryo has a lot to answer for. But taller kids often have a kind of gangling lack of spacial awareness I have observed. Meanwhile, my diminutive son is a hard charging, lean and focussed ball of muscle, much like less-than-tall Candide Thovex.

@PaulC1984, ....I've just read the review of the new Santa Cruz Bronson - mbr gave it a 10 - at 8,000 pounds.
EIGHT THOUSAND POUNDS......!!!
I hide the cost of my recent builds by sneaking components in one at a time and hoping there's no adding up going on. Useful for me to engage in a bit of denial too...
But 8,000!
Makes my recent purchase of some new Atomic Hawks in the sale (220 gbp) look like loose change.
