Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Volkl Kendo vs Scott The Ski

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I'm looking for a second pair of skis to complement my existing Volkl Gotamas.
I want something that helps me pootle around during the easy skiing weeks on the groomers but also helps with a bit of off-piste when conditions permit (or co-skiers allow). Dumping/powder days I would use the Gotamas.

Can anyone help making a list of pros and cons of one over the other (Kendo vs The Ski)?

I'm 181 and 96kg (eek!). Advanced skier... Puzzled

Both are v.good & would be a good choice to compliment your Gotamas. However the Kendo build quality isn't what it used to be (I've seen a good few delams in the last season or two on Kendo's & Mantra's) so my choice would either be the Le Ski or the Blizzard Brahma. The Brahma has the same 88mm underfoot as the Kendo versus the 92/3mm Le Ski. The flex is very similar on all three skis.

The Brahma's construction is really smoooooth & very torsionally stiff. They're very powerful when driven but you can still cruise about on them without them want to run away from you. And their 19m radius makes them very stable in variable snow/crud/chop etc & is which is my preference over Scott's mid teens variable radius sidecut. The rocker on the Brahma's makes them ski short so you'd want them in the 187cm length. I've had Brahma's since they first came out 4 years ago & ski them with Whitedot Rangers & Ragnaroks. The Brahma has been unchanged since its launch (always a good sign) but last season they replaced the metal in the front of the tip to reduce the swing weight but when I demo'd them I couldn't really tell the difference.

But you couldn't go wrong either with a 185cm Le Ski.

Whatever you get make sure you put a decent binding on them (ie something metal/torsionally stiff) is it'd be a shame to have a great performance ski topped with a squidgy binding.

Thanks Spyderjohn! Really helpful feedback!
I'm going to make a decision this week. For both set-ups, I've got a good deal on Jesters 16 as a free upgrade from my supplier, so bindings are covered.
I'm leaning towards "The Ski" based on maneuverability of the ski. I like a short turn now and again and I'm not speed-crazy.
"The Ski" dimensions this season are (for 185cm): 132-93-122 with a 19m radius.
But you've answered my question re: size...I guess they both ski short...so 184 for the Kendo and 185 for "The Ski" should be about right....

I hear you on the Brahma's and I looked into it, but can't source them where I am...they do have excellent reviews....hmmmmm.

@HTL, Sport Bittl have Brahmas and I assume you can order them from Luxembourg as well. I shop at Bittl whenever I'm not at Conrad so I reckon they are a reliable source (but I don't have any experience with their online shop so I'm not sure). Conrad don't do Blizzard skis for some reason.

@HTL, the Le Ski actually has a variable radius sidecut so although Scott say it's 19m is actually three different sidecuts from tip to tail, namely 20m then 16m then 14m so in reality in skis like a mid teens radius. That's no my preference but if you like a turny ski then it'll suit you. Bear in mind though that it's rare that you'll be carving all your turns so the true 19m radius & 4mm of camber on the Brahma will probably be more easily pivoted/steered than the 15m('ish) radius Le Ski that has 8mm of camber. The slightly longer radius/less camber of the Brahma will be more helpful in variable snow etc whereas the Le Ski has a spec more akin to a specialist piste ski just wider.

If you like the specs of the Le Ski but want more of a hard snow bias then you might want to consider the Scott Black Majic as it's the same construction as the Le Ski but is 78mm underfoot. I've only had a couple of runs on them but I thought they were great.
