Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

The North Face Point Five GORE-TEX Pro Jacket

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
So I'm looking to buy a new jacket and the [http://www.ellis-brigham.com/products/the-north-face-mens-point-five-gore-tex-pro-jacket/201101?itemid=95685] is looking good too me. But it doesn't come under a 'ski' jacket. It's waterproof and breathable but not insulated so would i need to wear something warm underneath? and what would i need to wear? perhaps a base layer (skins)?[/url]

There are some options. If you can spend a small amount more then this is probably better. It will allow access to pockets if wearing a pack

Or perhaps this one.

I have a goretex jacket but last year at the BB, I only wore it in Cortina and the rest of the time I had on just a small mid layer over a smart wool base. The Norrona jacket has DWR to get you home if it rains but how often will you ski in the rain or go so far you don't get home?

I do go far sometimes so always have a backup in pack.

For Goretex and higher p pockets

or slightly insulated

I wear........

Base layer leggings and this

I had a yellow pair I got for £100 rom Ellis Brigham but got these green ones at this price recently.

For a top I wear icebreaker base layer and this

or this

ad take a waterproof in my pack. I find it easily warm enough and anything else is too hot for me.

I have a North Face Point Five jacket and I can tell you that it is categorically NOT a ski jacket!

It's a very good jacket by all accounts. It is proper Goretex, it has a tall hood to fit over a helmet, and it has high pockets to give access even if tucked into a harness. I work in a harness and helmet, and I use it as my work jacket.

However it doesn't feature a powder belt, a lift pass holder in the arm (which I consider an essential), and the velcro fasteners on the arms use some rubbery material which is impossible to grab with gloves on. Off the top of my head I also don't think there is any facility to stash the hood.

Really it is an out-and-out waterproof jacket. It is perfect for me when what I want is something that I can stand in the fiercest sideways upside down British rain and know that it won't leak but still won't make me sweat. There's a bit of a market lack in straight forward, no frills, just keep the water out, jackets. And it does that great. But it really wouldn't fulfil any of the things that you want a ski jacket to do.

We all have different preferences and like different stuff, so if you like those features then go ahead and enjoy them. Personally I've had jackets with all those features, and have decided that I'm better off without any of them...

Powder skirt - I like chest high salopettes, so no use to me. That said, even when skiing in soft shell trousers I've fallen over in powder and not missed the powder skirt.

Lift Pass Holder - A ski pass in an inside pocket works in all the resorts I've skied in.

Stowable hood - I like to leave the hood unstowed so I can put my hood up on chair lifts.
