Check out airb&b. Larger resorts own tourist websites also seem to cut the middleman out as well!

Just so we can continue to stray slightly off topic...
Do the snowheads who list on the bigger sites feel that they have to in order to ensure rental?
Or do they list with the bigger sites for some form of implied security?
Or are people happy with the 8% levy so that they dont have to do any of the leg work?
Perhaps its just the lesser of two weevils?
If @Admin were to chisel off a dark corner of this site and charge the tiniest of advertising fees, I'm sure the Snowheads could take a little slice out of the big boys winter market
Perhaps this magical forum exists and there are amazing ski chalet deals to be had and none of us have found them yet??

>Depends on the expected occupancy. If an owner expects near-full occupancy, in my opinion they have to list on many of the big sites.

>No, though Airbnb does offer quite good insurance if the Rolling Stones turn up for a geriatrics' ski week and the TV ends up in the pool.

>Can't speak for others, but I also have a site where I do the "legwork". Via my site, you get a 10% discount because the 8% commission (plus 3% charged to owner) is otherwise passed on to the renter.

>I'd love to agree with you, but I doubt it. Airbnb, Homeaway, Tripadvisor are big businesses with several times the traffic of this site. Come to think of it, this answers the OP's question - Homeaway, Airbnb and Tripadvisor should cover it if you're looking for non-agency, i.e. direct rentals. Or this site if you'd prefer to rent from a SH.

@snoozeboy, I bet the conversion rate on SH's would be massively more massive than others.

I would advise staying in somewhere like Annemasse until 3rd or 4th Jan and then finding somewhere. If you have a car it is still only 30 mins to a resort.

Surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet, but why not have a look on leboncoin? That's where we found our apartment when we did things DIY, generally a lot of French owners in each of the stations have something listed (it's the French equivalent of Gumtree). Some good deals. Only issue is that you'd need to be able to speak French to use it.

@michaelbury17, this might work - http://www.montagnettes.co.uk/
places across 3v. I have stayed in Les M and 1650. les M is pretty much ski in/out but then a walk down the piste to the bar of an evening. C1650 is a couple of mins walk to the lifts
ticks all the other boxes
