Help!!
Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hi all
The family and I are off to Solden for a summer holiday and are keen to do some of the via ferratas they have there. Does anyone know if there any climbing shops there where we might be able to hire via ferret lanyards?
Cheers.

You could try the shops listed in this site
http://www.sport4you.at/en/summer-sports/hiking-climbing.html
- they seem to do daily/weekly rates for VF equipment in the Soelden area.
We've done several of the routes in the area, so you should have great fun there!
Just as a general note for people thinking of doing VF routes - it is important to use proper Kinetic Energy absorbing slings, and not (like we did the first time
) just use standard climbing slings and crabs - this video will give you a wake up call

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@geoffers
, thanks, I've seen the list of routes on the Tourism website...which would you recommend for families-two daughters (9 and 10), not wimpy, used to rock climbing. We did a couple of easy short ones (basically scrambles) in the Dolomites last year and they loved it. Using slings and carabiners as well...

2 good ones for starters are here, grade B/C...
Umhausen

Längenfeld

- there's now a new top section to the Seilbrucke bridge which we didn't
do - grade D&E which looks seriously steep & strenuous
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I bought my own kit as I already have the climbing gear, just did my first route last week. And as shown above, not only would slings be likely to snap in a vertical drop above fall factor 2, the impact force to the human body would be considerable with a fairly high risk of severe internal damage, especially to the spine and head. You could use a shock absorbing sling as often used in ice climbing, but even the krabs are prone to failure with a sudden sideways force against a fixed iron peg. The VF krabs are a softer alloy with a flatter surface that can deform in such an impact.
