Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Shell ski jackets?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi All
I'm thinking of buying a shell ski jacket for sking in warmer conditions. Got rather hot the season before last when skiing in my heavy jacket at Easter.
Are there any makes that should be on my list? I'm looking for something of reasonable to good quality without a stratospheric price attached
Any recommedation will be gratefully received!

Mountain Equipment Changabang, keep an eye on ebay, slight seconds pop up every now and again. Got mine for well under half list price and took two min to fix the fault, they had got a bit carried away gluing the zip in the inside pocket in place and glued it shut.

If you want a breathable jacket for warm weather, get a soft shell rather than a hard shell.

I tend to take a hard and a soft shell along, for the really warm spring days the hardshell with a lightweight merino tshirt (Aldi's finest!) under is much more comfortable than a soft shell.

I find soft shell jackets too warm generally. Prefer a hard shell one, as can layer up when temperatures drop without looking too rotund. Would strongly recommend Eider as decent quality and not overly expensive, especially in late season sales. Got mine for £150 from Ellis Brigham in mid-March 2010 and it's still going strong.

Hi again and thanks for all the tips - I've ordered a Rab Exodus jacket (as suggested by @Belch - thanks!) from Cotswold Outdoors in a snazzy reddish colour. The red one was on offer! I shall also keep an eye out for any hard shell bargains that pop up (i.e TK Max etc)

@ivorf, I normally get too hot as well. Have just skied the birthday bash in Arabba in a rab exodus jacket. Worked well, breathes much better than hard shell and kept warm when it snowed all day, not waterproof but shed most of the snow / rain and I ended up no wetter than if I'd worn a less breathable hard shell in the rain.
