Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Derbyshire boot shops

Poster: A snowHead
Hello

I'm looking to buy a pair of boots but there seems to be nowhere in Derbyshire I can go to.

Ideally I'm after somewhere with a workshop too as I have skis that need setting up as well.

Budget is around £250 fully fitted.

I'm near Ashbourne and trying to avoid a two hour drive.

All recommendations appreciated.

Thanks

Ned.

Closest and most likely to come in on budget is Decathlon over at Giltbrook, they do ski ski servicing as well. Ellis Brigham at Tamworth snowdome do a good job, but think they send stuff away for servicing. Other than that its a fair old trip as the others I'd suggest are Lockwoods and Rivington Alpine, both a couple of hours away (I'm in Wirksworth).

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

The only place I can think of in Derbyshire is Ski & Sport in Dronfield.

Others close-ish to me (Amber Valley) are:

Decathlon (Nottingham Giltbrook)
Two Seasons (Nottingham)
Dick's (Sheffield)
Snow & Rock (Sheffield)
Ellis Brigham (Tamworth Snowdome)

All are within an hour's drive from you I would think.

Thanks for the replies.

I've had Lockwoods and a place in Ilkley recommended but they are both a two hour drive away which I don't think I have time for this side of Xmas.

Someone else mentioned Ski and Sport so maybe I'll head up there.

I'll take a look at the others first though. I hadn't even considered Decathlon. I tend to buy things like socks from them so I'll check them out too.

Take care

Decathlon, make sure you find one of the ski specialists you'll be fine, they are the also the cheapest place round here to get custom foot beds made and my £30 pair from Decathlon work just as well as my £80 ones from EB, to be honest I couldn't tell you now which are in my ski boots and which are in my snowboard boots.
Ski and Sport, I went in when in looking for boots they only stocked a couple of brands neither of which suited me and sad to say they did seem more interested in selling me a boot they stocked than one that sort of fitted. Contrast that with Ellis Brigham at Tamworth who opened the conversation by saying they weren't sure if they'd have anything suitable for my foot shape and ski style (it was late in the season) but if not they'd ring round the other places in the area like Lockwoods to find somewhere that could sell me the right boot.

To be honest you are at the budget end of the market when it comes to buying fully fitted boots, particularly if doing it properly with a custom footbed. You may struggle to find something under £250 at one of the independent specialist shops. Don't ignore the decathlon own brand Wed'ze boots, my daughter has a pair and is very pleased with them.

More great advice. What a superb site.

Really pleased I posted. Thanks everyone.

It sounds like I should start with Decathlon and see where that takes me. Is it worth phoning ahead to make sure they have the right staff on?

There is usually at least one of the ski techs on duty through the season but no harm phoning to find out out who it is so you can ask for them by name.
