Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Winter (at last) in the North Pennines - here's a shot from this morning's Yadcams Smile

Methinks a few ski touring turns against the snow fences could be a possibility - although the wind is currently rather ferocious 650m lower (an hour away)... rolling eyes

Were hoping to run the tow tomorrow although it will be thin typical early season pennine skiing. The ground is pretty wet as you would expect after all that rain last week. Currently minus 3 and low humidity. Forecast is a light northerly wind a perhaps a further dusting of snow. Going a bit milder later in the week.

Lovely ascent skinning up at Yad Moss late pm today - sunny, powdery snow and a nippy -4C at the bottom.

However...the descent was a nightmare. Never seen snow like it in almost 30 years skiing - our skis wouldn't run. AT ALL. Totally stuck - couldn't budge! We just couldn't slide downhill, even on steeper bits. It was as though we were standing on glue. We had to release our touring bindings & 'skin' down the fall line (no skins on though!).

The skis were really iced up on the bases - about 1" thick.

We met 3 boarders up there - they couldn't slide downhill either...

I managed ONE turn, right at the top on a wind blown bit and two more turns on thin cover/grass just before the road.

Still can't believe it. Will be interested to find out how it 'skis' tomorrow if the lift is on Puzzled

Well Yad moss was on today. First lift served this year in the UK. Fairly challenging conditions. My tele muscles are aching now.

Report and pics here. Sorry about the typos eg 'piste badger' 😀

Expect thin wet grassy snow on a very saturated grassy base with some lightly frozen sticky crud.........and you won't be disappointed.

Popped up to Weardale this afternoon:

- Thin cover on the runs
-+1C
- Fog
- Heavy conditions
- Skied off in places - down to the mud
- Enjoyed it - we've skied worse Smile

Cheers kitenski. It wasn't too combat-like due to the underlying grass wink - although the walk-in (which was diverted due to a landslide) was like the mud of The Somme in places Confused....

Day two at Yad moss. Better than it looked on the webcam. Reasonable skiing but could have done with drier air to dry out the snow a little.

The next week looks very mild and still rather damp.

Pictures look good today from Raise on their FB page. Plenty of snow and despite all the damage from flooding last week - washed out access road, major landslip in Savage gully, severed power cable etc.......the Members have quickly fixed all these problems and reaped the rewards today. Well done them.

@Peter S, Yad Moss webcams look very bare, lots needed I'd say, but frozen ground I'd say based on how cold it was in Leeds this morning....

Grooming in progress. Weekend outlook looks good. Staying cold but may get some heavy traffic.

Great skiing over the weekend. Yadmoss is considering running again on Wednesday and probably Raise also, at least one of the mid week days. Really good cover at Raise.

Check out their websites.

Looks like the milder air arrives Friday Sad

Another full day of skiing at Raise yesterday. Yad Moss and Raise have now run 6 days so far so not a bad start to the season. Yad Moss has been wiped out now but Raise retains excellent fence to fence cover on the main run.

Yesterday morning was wet, but persistence paid off and things brightened up in the afternoon. The ski surface improved throughout the day. Another 10 pomas have been added to the line significantly improving uplift capacity.

Sadly we are back to rain, gales and flooding this week. Looking forward to the next cooler and drier...spell.

Just back from a spot of ski touring at Yad Moss:
- 0C at the car park.
- Foggy but visibility not too bad.
- Flurries of snow that turned to very fine drizzle.
- Very thin cover of 1-2cm, with some treacherous lumps of frozen soil, We still managed some fun turns and it was nice to be out Very Happy.
- Combat skiing back down to the roadside.

Heavy snow falling above 2000'. Good direction for Raise which should be operational again soon given the amount of potential snow this week. Yad moss looks more marginal. Watch this space.

The front page picture on Fridays The Times was a skier on the lift at Raise followed by their dog with Ullswater below.

Excellent snow up there yesterday. Dry and very cold. Visibility however was often poor.

Yadmoss open today although it will be thin. More snow tonight.
Cool

Saw the picture in the Times @Peter S, looked just like the Alps snowHead. Was last up Helvellyn last August, must admit though I wouldn't fancy the hike up to Raise with skis at my advanced age. But good for those who do get up there Very Happy

Billb, if you can walk up Helvellyn im sure you would be fine and very welcome at Raise.

Lots of LDSC members in their 70s getting their French passes for free! The legendary Bernie Warriner was skiing well into his 80s and still skiing more days than perhaps any other English resident skier. He was toting 70 plus day seasons, largely up at Raise !

@Peter S, thanks. Although from Preston originally, I'm now about 240 miles from Glenridding so am only up north now and then. I still can't help thinking it must be a lot of effort to lug skis and boots up the hill.
