Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@8611, lift openings are well publicised on the CMB website.

They are, but not necessarily accurately... On Sunday morning CMB website said everything at GM was open except the top bin and Herse. Got there to find only Lognan, Marmottons and Tabe running - and a liftie at the bottom telling everyone to go to Le Tour as nothing else would open up due to the wind (As if you're going to head to Le Tour when it's windy!!)

Anyway, went up and the wind was nothing like as bad as forecast but it still took them an hour to get the bottom bubble going and a further hour for Bochard and Herse - but that did coincide with heavy snow starting up so the couple of runs we got in from Bochard were fantastic!

None of us were complaining particularly as we know well, and happily accept, the foibles of the CMB but just a cautionary tale to the uninitiated to take a lot of what they say - either on the web or in person - with a healthy pinch of salt.. (except of course, and before everyone howls, the avalanche levels!)

Brevent this morning was awesome, if you could get to the fresh snow. Super busy, and within about an hour of the Cornu opening, pretty skied out. But, good while it lasted and still some spots if you fancied a hike Smile

@under a new name, yeah fair point. He was trying to find us best combination and have to defend him / firm for that.

Anyway absolute epic day today. GM from first thing was some of the most fun I've ever had on snow. Flegere / Brevent in PM was pretty tracked and sunned off piste a bit thicker than GM this AM - but fun fun fun. First time here and love this resort (even despite the busses!?)

@jma, fair points, although CMB have been pretty accurate this season as far as I can tell.

Not sure how it actually works, as I'd expect open to mean just that. Not "expected to open".

VB was great, ankle to waist deep, fluffy pow. Should be again, next time the weather gods let us see it. Sorry no pics or vid today, working on a promo vid for a friend.

Rather worrying how little snow lower down, yes everything is white, but below 1600m there is very little snow , and nothing under it bar the rocks and grass.

Top tip. Don't go near the tunnel. Just come through, much chaos, Trucks and cars all over the place. I even spotted a car pushing another up the hill, last time I saw that was in Argentina. Worse on the Italian side.

Any of you Cham regulars going to be around this weekend. It would be great to meet up with some of you on Sunday for some powder riding. Conditions look good and I am just over in Geneva. Please PM me if possible. Thanks

All time conditions right now!!! Seriously! There's a foot of fresh in my driveway just from today.

Yesterday was bluebird laps of the Cornu in deep, snow. Today was better - storm skiing off the Brevent top bin. One lap of the Bellin and 2 of the ENSA Couloir in (probably) the best powder snow I've skied this winter. Get out there!

Silly season is here, this was at 9.45am, by 10am it had grown another 50m - now at lunch time it looks similar.

I had waited 10min this morning to get first lift, done 2 runs and thought I'd do a piste lap - headed off to deal with bureaucracy - 3 hours to do what should take 5 min - vive la France

10cm Fresh on a firm base up high, refrozen pistes down low. For once a decent enough base everywhere Wink

Skied VB today. Nasty windcrust, 1 cm of hard/variable over 30 - 50 soft (not fluffy).
Down low the crust got soft enough and the staff below got shallow enough that it was sort of skiable.
Down in the valley as uann said it's late April.

A quick ENSA this morning - gorgeous snow up top, especially on the back of the Brevent summit, mid calf blower pow.
Thoroughly nasty down low, sun baked breakable on heavy stuff, almost unskiable and the last 100m vert is a walk.
Wind stopping play in many places.

By the time we got there and up the bubble ... Ugh. Gusty, zero visa and snowing.

Straight down for last night's curry leftovers.

Where was everyone this morning? I walked straight onto the GM telepherique , they didn't even fill it before heading up there were so few people.
20cm of fresh on top of yesterdays windblown.
Vis was in and out but still fresh tracks until afternoon.

How is the depth of snow looking compared to last year? Lots in the forecast for the next 5 days. I'm going to be ski touring around Chamonix first week of April, hoping to do a bit of touring over the Aiguille Rouge side and down to Le Buet at some point, which was not possible for us last year mid April due to lack of snow.

@musehead, got down to le buet a couple of time earlier this year , so with the new snow due over the next few days i don't think you'll have to worry snowHead snow depths are good , just been warm and windy which has made things iffy at times , but temps seem to be getting lower in march so looks like winter has just come little later this year Toofy Grin

Conditions over the past few days have been EPIC. Potentially best of the season so far (if you don't mind skiing without seeing where you're going at times...).

Le Tour yesterday morning (through the forest) had fresh powder all day, then GM today proved to be equally exceptional, albeit skied out by about 12 (unless you went off the beaten track).

So much awesomeness.[/img]

First day back on skis, and in Cham, since mid Jan - and GM was fantastic! Really quiet this morning too.

We got a ticket for top bin at 11.55, but then hopped straight on it for an early warm up run anyway, as there was no queue, and wow! Fully expected it to be tracked out from yesterday, but it was beautifully topped up from last nights snow. Later run was also fantastic, heading further out towards the glacier. And Lavenchets put in a rather stunning show too Smile was still getting fresh tracks there easily at 11.30am.

I'm so not ski fit though, and my legs are telling me about it now! Totally worth it though Smile

Will stick up some corroborating photos when i get better internet later...

@fixx, +1 , gm today was fab , laps of top bin in cold light pow , then tree runs to die for , light went flat for a while but finished off with a great run off the herst and down to the refuge and beyond , great day but knackered now Toofy Grin

Le tour this morning - lovely pistes but pretty frozen off piste until sun softened things up by lunchtime. 1 hour stuck on vallorcine gondola Crying or Very sad a real pain.
PM at grand montets - big off piste mogul fields beside pylones .... Relentlessly challenging but lovely chalky snow.
Clouds and flat light from 2-4 but brightened up for a lovely retour pendant and Pierre a ric home ..... Soft and quiet Toofy Grin

bit off topic (sorry) but I'm determined to actually make it round to GM from Les Contamines over Easter with the family. Any thoughts on the best day to avoid the hordes? We'll be skiing from Easter Sat to the following Sunday. I'm guessing Saturdays are good skiing but driving will be a pain. Sunday queues for lift tickets will be bad. Best mid-week?

@jedster, Easter not usually too bad anyway but yes, mid week will be quietest. Don't you have passes to charge on line? Or won't Les Contamines sell them (maybe just MBU).

@jedster, as @under a new name says the Easter period is not usually too bad, I would avoid the Bank Hol visitors and come second half of that week.
