Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

A week ago just before the Midi closed for the interseason I was lucky enough to go for a cheaky ski with Glen and Kimberly Plake - Snow was nice and the upper part of the VB is starting to fill in after a rather warm summer

How easy is it to drive across to Verbier from Chamonix in winter?
Is the route de la Forclaz kept open?

Our son is working there this season so looking for the quickest route to visit him.

Most days it is fairly easy, only after snowfall can the forclaz be closed or difficult.

go to the road conditions link via the Chamonix websitr to be sure you are getting the right pass.

My sat nav (which uses RDS for traffic problems etc) decided the Col de Forclaz was closed a couple of seasons ago, and won't accept it's ever opened since. Keeps wanting me to go via Geneva to get from Chx to Martigny in August!

@pam w, We'll probably only visit when the weather and forecast is good.

Evening everybody. I'm checking in for another winter representing everybody's favorite British ski tour operator.

What a summer we've had in the Chamonix valley. Now winter has arrived, and this year it's going to be a good one!! Temperature is dropping and there's been flurries of snow in town all day snowHead

Two large avalanches at GM today started by piste security. The first photo is the GM glacier in the area of the point du vue piste, (photo Jean-Luc Lugan) the second is a Fatmap screen grab of the same area with the ski lines marked. Shows well how the piste guys keep us safe.

Partial opening of GM and Les Houches this weekend, according to many gloating Geneva friends on Facebook (and by CdMB via email NehNeh).

Very jealous – I've just got a session in a snowdome on Sunday. Why did I move away from the Alps again?!

Skinned up Les Houches this morning,

Snow cannons in full swing

Not bad view on the way up

This is one of the pistes that most people were skiing down

But just round the corner there was a lot more left to play with - calf deep with an ok base

A good view across Combloux to the Aravis from the top - staff still working on the New lift.

Prarion to Col de Vosa, part lovely pow/surface hoar, part piste, part death crust and part horrible frozen artificial snow.

Skied les Houches this morning.
They had only pisted the Kandahar piste, the other 3 1/2 variants were an unpisted mess.
Down to the bottom was a similar sh(t show.
The worst bit is the shuttle, they were using SWB Renault Traffics equipped for disabled access.
In other words only 5 passengers per lap, only 2 vans or a lift capacity of 30 people per hour.
The alternative - drive up to Maison Neuf wasn't working either, by 10.30 they were parking down both sides of what is not much more than a single track road!
All in all a very poor showing by Les Houches, yesterday was much better Wink
Oh piste conditions was soft all the way through to ice due to very poor pisting and even worse snow canon management.
