Although if the restaurant in Cervinia is the one I'm thinking of, certain newspapers will tell you it serves the best food in the Alps - of course they've tried all of them!
The ski area in Cervinia is very beginner/intermediate friendly.

@porkpiefox, My thoughts - maybe more should go for a gourmet week some place warm, and a trip or 2 to a local fridge maybe?
I've personally never had poor food when away (apart from Cervinia late 80's where food was really bad), generally good restaurants are not hard to find in my experience. We generally go where the locals eat, they know stuff.....

Go somewhere with a good range of interesting restaurants. Eating in the same place every evening is unimaginative.

@NewSki, no, there isn't just 1 good place to eat in Cervinia. There are many, but there is 1 in particularly which is very well known (Chalet Etoile). The truth is as @Markymark29 suggests, skiers seem to like their food, because in general the quality of food in most ski resorts is very good even where the food is fairly simple.
The only place I've been to and thought the food in general on the mountain was poor was in Grandvalira in Andorra, but even then we had a good week skiing so didn't mind too much.

Of course there is only one. Italians know nothing about food and ussualy they eat dog food ... If you like good food, avoid Italy by all means.

If you're looking at Austria then in no particular order I'd suggest Mayrhofen, Zell am See, Westendorf, Kirchberg/Kitzbuhel. If you're going in January then the chances of having good snow cover are high, but if you should be unlucky then the first two resorts have the advantage of nearby guaranteed glacier skiing (at Hintertux for Mayrhofen and Kaprun for Zell am See).
