Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Boot help/advice

Hi All,

I bought a pair of boots about 5 years ago (Salomon Impact 10, if that helps) and I have found on my last couple of years that they are getting quite uncomfortable on the outside of my feet and that I get massive blisters on my inner calfs. Also my liners are now slightly twisted in the shells so that they are no longer straight. A couple of years ago I got them altered in resort to help with the pain in my feet, but nothing has helped the blisters, so when I now ski, I ski with plasters to stop the rubbing.

90% of my skiing is on piste, but I do ski quite aggressively.

Just wondering what people suggest to solve this issue, other than just putting plasters on?

Any help would be appreciated as otherwise I may have to consider getting new boots, which I would like to avoid as I have probably only skied on these boots for about 60 days.

Thanks! Very Happy

Apart from what @mooney058, suggests, which is 100% spot on, as it sounds as though your boots don't fit properly, get new boots. Liners last IMO around 120 days so maybe properly fitted liners would help.

Or, surgery. It has come on leaps and bounds in recent decades. Avoid infection and what could possibly go wrong?

Out of interest, have you done a shell check? As in, taking the liner out and seeing how much space there is behind your heel when your foot is touching the front of the shell with your toes?

Also nice to see that you ski "aggressively"...Everyone online does that wink

@richk, I feel for you. Was having similar issues myself before I visited a specialist boot fitter. The trick is that even if you try a nice new pair of boots in a shop that you 'feel' are rigth and comfortable and the salesperson is also noding, there is a high probability that these are not the right boots for you.... In my case the specialist looked at my feet, asked several questions, took some measurements, asked me to climb on a devise with mirrors beneath my feet. And the pair of boots I got were feeling a bit too tight for me (at the begining). BUT:

- I never use thick socks anymore
- I do not need to do my buckles too much - just until the first slight resistance.

By boots feel snug but comfy. No problems with over-fastening, no issues with calfs or feet (except the first two days until my feat worked trhough the new liner). Btw, before visit to a specialist, I was skiing Salomon Mission 10 for 5 years, but 1 size too big ...

I know we are all adults and can decide for ourselves. But seeing a specialist resulted in an enourmous increase in skiing pleasure. I used to enjoy it, now i LOVE it Smile and it increased my 'performance' Smile but above all, stability and comfort.

PS I hate predictive spelling on my phone as whenever I'm traveling and typing, it put lots of nonsence, hope it is still coprehesible ...

Thanks for all your comments, but yes it does appear that my boots may be too big which is causing the rubbing, but I do only tighten them to the third buckle around the leg.

I purchased the boots from profeet in London, do you think I should return to them or are there other better boot fitters about?

@richk, in principle, Profeet should be quite good enough. But I would not expect much more than sympathy after 5 years... Otherwise Colin at Solutions4Feet in Bicester would be well worth the trip.

@Lilledonmarco, yes, standing up straight with toes touching the front of the boot (well as straight as possible when trying to measure!)there is probably a gap of about 15-20mm

@richk, which isn't completely ridiculous... From elsewhere,

"Have you or the shop you bought from done a shell check without the liner to determine the length of the boot.

With the toes touching the front of the boot.

Approx 7/10mm for a performance fit ( that may need tweaking and adjusting)
10/15 mm for a comfy out of the box fit
> 20mm the boots could be too big "

Profeet will ( at least they do with me ) a free "MOT" on any boot they have sold, however long since. Ie my 3 year old but 10 weeks of skiing the foot began to move, they put a heel lift in and moved a buckle ratchet to give e a whole new range of tighter. worse case they will try and sell you some new kit . ranging from a liner to new boots etc.
