A tiny dusting has arrived but gone. Great to see things cooling down though.

First one of these of the season. Heaviest in East. Won't last long and whilst there's still some messing around to come as @emwmarine, says first wave of winter.
Flew over North Italian and Swiss Alps yesterday on way back from Crete ..... looked like a good bit of fresh snow over I guess 2,000m .... excited already.

Just got back to Austria after 2 months in Bali, and there's snow on the peaks
Which is nice compensationf or having to wear underwear, socks and shoes again, and shiver my way form bed to shower in the morning

Cooling weather forces deadly false widow spiders to seek refuge in British homes, probably under the duvet, or the loo seat, or maybe in your slippers!

nozawaonsen, i note there is a "warmer tendencey" yellow blob covering almost all of the alps.

Jonpim Yeah, for Oct-Nov. Anyway, 'warmer tendency' might be OK as long as it comes with plenty of precipitation (jet stream further south, bringing in more storms from west?). Could mean lots of snow, with the snow line just being a little higher than average. Almost certainly a better situation for skiers than 'colder tendency' but dry.
In reality, nobody will be able to tell you what this winter has in store for definite. Well after March they will.

Ravelin, you are of course right.
But it is the game we play each year: pouring over the forecasts, discussing ad nauseum every report, every change in the weather, every flake as it falls (and then melts).
Conjecture. It is the way lots of us get through Awful Autumn.
That, and booking flights and trains and passes and buying new stuff.
Roll on December.
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Yes the Met Office does suggest a link between El Niño and a warmer Oct-Nov in parts of continental Europe, but as the article says there are plenty of others drivers for the weather in Europe rather than just ENSO. As @Ravelin, says cold can often mean dry and done of the heavier snow years have had slightly milder, but wet winters (which is what CFS currently suggests). For what it's worth that would probably not be as a result of the jet being further south. If that were the case it would bring colder conditions to much of the Alps, particularly the northern Alps (a -NAO would be likely in that scenario). At present a +NAO looks more likely from the CFS forecast.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Bringing strong winds (over 100kmh) to parts of the eastern Alps and possible record breaking warmth for the time of year to eastern Austria.
By tomorrow it's all switched and the wind is coming from the north potentially bringing snow down to around 2100m in the eastern Alps on Sunday and Monday.
You know it makes sense.

The winter of 13/14 in Scotland was a great example of that. At low level it was rain, after rain, after rain. Very little snow. Yet most of the Scottish ski resorts were struggling to keep the tows running because they were having to constantly dig them out from under several feet of snow (Lecht was the exception because it's relatively low).
@Johpim I obsess too, that's why I'm here. It's through obsessing that I've come to realise that the fickle nature of the weather means that predicting it more than a few days in advance, especially for one very small geographical area, is still largely beyond us. Won't mean I stop obsessing though, I'll still be following every winter prediction and forecast for St.Anton & Scotland in the hope/expectation of strapping the skis back on again.

Today's 35.5C at Gumpoldskirchen is a new record high for the second half of September in Austria.
Meanwhile in the west the storms in Tirol have brought down trees and cut power shutting the train line between St Anton and Landeck.

@nozawaonsen, it was the Föhn winds that bought down the trees, not a storm as most Brits would understand it. Standing on my balcony last night was like standing in front of a hot-air blower or heater. I thought my roof was going to get blown off and land on kooky in Altenmarkt today! I live just above the Inntal in the Chiemgau by the way. The Föhn this past couple of days has been stronger than I've known it for a long while. It was 31°C on my balcony at about 13:00 today; by 16:00 when I left for Munich, it was down to 13°C, no wind as such and a cold front preceded by a band of rain.

A while away but next Wednesday looks like it could bring snow to low levels.
GFS probably slightly overplaying it on Swiss Italian border.

Snow line looks like it could fall to 1400-1500m in parts of Tirol mid week with 20-50cm of snow in parts of the eastern Alps.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.
Low pressure pushing down over The Low Countries midweek will send cold weather and snow down to 1400m in the Eastern Alps. Temperatures will be rising again by the end of the week so it won't last long but should look nice.
On Tuesday night snowfall is anticipated over widespread areas. The snowfall level in northern regions will drop down to approximately 1400 m; in southern regions down to approximately 1800 m. On Wednesday in northern regions, snowfall is anticipated, in southern regions there will be bright intervals during the afternoon, accompanied by northerly winds.
Between Tuesday evening and Thursday morning above approximately 2500 m, the following amounts of fresh fallen snow are expected:
- Central and eastern sectors of the northern flank of the Alps, northern and central Grisons, Ticino: 30 to 50 cm
- Remaining parts of the northern flank of the Alps,
- Remaining parts of Grisons: 10 to 30 cm
- Valais: maximum 10 cm
At 2000 m, approximately half the indicated amounts of snowfall can be expected.
As long as the snowfall continues, strong westerly to northwesterly winds will be blowing at high altitudes.
After all it is free

Last took a look at these about a month ago. The picture remains broadly consistent.
- A pretty strong signal for a milder than average and wetter than average November to February.
- Little indication of early season northern blocking, indeed the opposite with a +NAO looking likely.
Not necessarily a bad outlook in terms of snowfall at altitude.

@kioksor, not quite sure what you mean? If you are asking how accurate the previous two years CFS long range forecasts are I've not checked, but in general I'd take them with a pinch of salt (and in fairness the models are pretty heavily and clearly caveated in terms of their accuracy).

@nozawaonsen, Was just thinking an overall trend as the last two festive seasons have been disappointing
I like the idea of wetter, but not so sure about warmer
