GFS forecast was good this week with heavy snow last night and this morning, trickling down to 1400m in NW. All four seasons made an appearance today. And looks set to continue until next week, with sun, rain and then decent snow on monday, 23rd May. Hashtag whatever winter is coming.

Lots of snow in Les Saisies, too, and no doubt all over the place. Not at all unusual as @Weathercam's link underlines.

A good 30-40cm of fresh snow widely across Switzerland according to SLF automatic stations. Engelberg is still open - could be fun tomorrow.

A very wet and and cold May in Austria.
http://www.zamg.ac.at/cms/de/klima/news/mai-2016-sehr-nass-und-etwas-zu-kuehl
Temperatures were 0.2C below average although that masks some much warmer temepratures at times, 32.5C in Salzburg on 22 May.
Since January 2011 there have been 53 months with above average temperatures, this May was only the 12th with below average.
It was (as was much of Europe) a very wet month, 46% above average and one of the 20 wettest May's since records began in 1858. Again this hid regional varitations with some areas between Salzburg and Vienna seeing 213% of average.

Can't wee it being used in Austria or Germany as the agreements with the landowners are already agreed years in advance The Alms are important for the summer animals, any way. The Germans, Austrians and most other skiing nations just stop coming in big numbers after Easter no matter how good the snow is. Resorts start closing, either end of play on Easter Monday or the following Sunday ,(ironically called White Sunday)
Even trying to construct new reservoirs for the current cannons cause very bitter discussions; a local sloped to me (used by the FIS snowboard World Cup races and the home slopes for a couple of World Champions (Eckert and Lubbock sp?), met with massive objections. My physio is one of the slope "owners, so I got a blow by blow (sometimes quite literally because he was so frustrated by the tree-hugger's pathetic actions. The plan was designed from the beginning that it would be a biotope in summer and an environmentaltal scientist was aon board from the beginning and is still involved.

In France they're thin on the ground even before Easter unless it's very early - numbers drop off rapidly towards the end of March, though snow is often still fine.

Which is healthy. We should be thinking of beaches and summer sports in the summer months not looking at snowheads.

Just been looking at Courchevel webcams (sad I know) and amazed to see that it would still be possible to ski Saulire.is this exceptional or normal?

Crazy amounts of rain here the last few weeks. Ruetzbach (the river that flows from Stubbier Glacier) broke it's 5 year high water record twice this week (still less than half of the 10 year record! which must have been insane!), and everything else is flying pretty high too.
New snow on the peaks and around Schruns, and Stubai is due around 40cm of snow high up in the next few days... Unfortunately they closed early for lift maintenance/building new lifts early this summer, but any new snow will be very helpful for keeping the glacier in good shape for September!
Looks like the Inn's a bit too high for my favourite river wave, but I'm glad to see it's still working (it was pretty badly affected by high water last summer). Photo from Ted at White Descents:

Look at the history on the web cam, you can go back to see what it was like.
There was a small snow patch through to end of july last year

It's normal to have the snow stay through June in the higher altitudes. When i've been in Val Thorens banging away at something in the apartment, then for a break wandering up the slopes, there is often snow left where the pistes were and on north facing slopes.
This year was very good late on and it hasn't been that warm so I imagine there would be a fair amount of snow above 2600 metres. I'll tell you in a few weeks.
