Poster: A snowHead

Morning all,
Thanks for all the suggestions for an end of Jan weekend trip, I'm currently favouring flaine/Les Carroz
If I stay at Les Carroz, can I get up into the "good" skiing quickly from there, or would I be better off staying in Flaine?
Can anyone recommend a good hotel and boot fitter? I want a very knowledgable bootfitter to double check my liner/boot fit, as per my thread here: http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=11663
Lastly I seem to remember the off piste being dangerous in Flaine due to the holes in the rock, is it a big no no going off piste without a guide?
cheers,
greg

Yes....unless the weather closes in then the links tend to close between the resorts. If that's the case then you want to be in Les Carroz or Samoens anyway as they have tree lined skiing and Flaine is just a cold wide open bowl!

There were signs up all over the place last week advising against off piste because of holes, cravasses etc....a few years ago Mr HH had an off piste lesson in Flaine and the instructor took them to look down one of the holes, very scary indeed!

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

gregh,
I've stayed here. it's a nice enough Hotel in the middle of town, but you really need a car to get to the slopes.
If I were going again I'd try this place which is on the snow near the bottom of the better run to the village. It's a short(ish) walk only into town.
I looked round shops in Les Carroz and Flain for a bootfitter for my wife, but came away unimpressed.

gregh, We stayed in the Bois de la Char, a couple of Xmases ago. Had a great week, really good atmosphere in the hotel, and sooooo convenient for the skiing. Bit of a hike back up from the town, and I'd say the hotel whilst perfectly adequate, is a bit on the basic side, both in terms of rooms and food - tasted lovely but not very adventurous in their menu.
