Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Fun article that will ring a few bells especially for latecomers to skiing and parenthood!

Nice one. If you like P.J. O'Rourke's style he's written a number of books now in paperbacks. My favourite is 'Holidays in Hell'. Superb description of Korean student riot management and loads of other funny travelogues from unlikely locations.

An Italian ski instructor once described a beginner as 'skiing like a stork trying to pass a bag of nails'. More descriptive than 'Donald Duck' Cool

Nice one PG, good way to start the day Very Happy All seems a little familiar - my son (11) keeps reminding me that the next time we ski, he'll give me some (much needed, apparently) coaching.

As for being likened to animals.....my wife was told by an ESF instructor a couple of years ago that she skied like an elephant. Now as a petite female, it couldn't have been an insult aimed at her size, although God alone knows what he meant. We were on holiday with a company called Hannibals at the time, so maybe it was a stab at humour......

PJ's a smart man, I don't think he called his children Muffin and Poppet. They may well be nicknames, and who knows? maybe he's thinking of protecting their privacy through later years.

PG, have you had a stab at any other of PJ's stuff? I'd be interested to hear your views...the man can be roaringly funny but his opinions are rather different to many of yours.

I heartily recommend his "All the Trouble in the World (The Lighter Side of Overpopulation, Famine, Ecological Disaster, Ethnic Hatred, Plague, and Poverty)"

I only used to get called poppet when my eyes flashed red and I moved into "hell raising brat " mode.

The best instructing I ever had was from my Uncle, he taught me more in one afternoon than two weeks in ski school, huge improvement.

My kids don't comment on my skiing.................I never manage to ski fast enough for them to see!

Oh yes and why is it when you finally catch up with the little b****rs, out of breath and legs shaking like jelly, you get "ok Mum?" and they are off again before you have enough breath to answer! Wink

There's a PJ Rourke quote that goes something like this:

""There's lots of argument about what kind of car drives best. Some say a front-wheel drive car. Some say a rear-wheel drive. I say it's a rental car. There are things you can do with a rental car that are just impossible with any other kind of vehicle."

Some might say - not me! - that the same applies to rented skis...

DavidS, you mean like they've got special wax for mounting kerbs ? Cool

He also calls the horn an Egyptian Brake Pedal - if you've ever been in Cairo you'll know exactly what he means.

Funny yes, outrageous at times. I have trouble knowing when to take him seriously, and find some of his stuff pretty naïve, particularly if it wasn't written 'tongue in cheek'. "Eat the Rich" was readable, but it still displays a considerable apparent ignorance of cultural and historical complexities. At least I managed to finish it though - books by authors who would consider Attila the Hun to be a pinkie wimp, with or without a sense of humour, are not my cup of tea!

When I think of the joy of teaching young children to ski I only have this in mind.

PS. Moderator - Hope this is inline with your expectation.

In general we prefer images to be links to the image rather than embedded pictures as above.

Two reasons, first it increases the download time for the page, important if you are on a dial-up, secondly it can spoil the look of the page if too many clashing graphics appear. "Makes the piste bumpy" in Ian's parlance.

The exceptions are the "Buy, Sell, Exchange" forum where pictures are obviously useful, and "Other Stuff" where anything goes and frequently does. snowHead

I was letting it pass in this instance but thanks for changing it. My post doesn't quite make sense now but I'll leave it for others to figure out what was there.
