Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Val T, Les M, St M - large rock blocking the main route-long delays and emergency shelters set up

Poster: A snowHead
A 100 tonne rock is blocking the RD117, hope they can do something before the morning as the diversion route looks very narrow and twisty. Pic and further details here:

It will disappear behind a paywall at some stage. But here's the pic:

From the Val Thorens website:

Update : 27/02/2015 - 9.00pm

Because of a boulder fall which happened at Fontaine le Puits, 9 kms from Moutiers, the traffic on the road RD117 « Vallée des Belleville » is not possible in both directions until further notice.
We encourage you to postpone your departure and do not travel in either direction.
An alternate for light vehicles is set up for a period of 1 hour for each direction, by the road RD96 "Côte Saint Laurent."
Warning : This road is closed for buses and trucks.
An emergency accommodation for people who can not reach the resorts has been set up at Gymnase Pierre Carnot in Moutiers.
Another emergency accommodation centres have been set up in Saint Martin de Belleville, Les Menuires and Val Thorens for people travelling by bus.

I'm surprised they are letting anyone use the road. Unless they can see the rock only fell a few metres, it will have loosened a lot more on the way down.

AAUI The diversion is a different (and narrow road) - the RD96 hence the one way system. A geologist has arrived on scene to assess the area around the fall. Glad no one got squished.

I've cycled up the other road and this will cause real problems tomorrow. Coaches will struggle. I don't think they are expecting to be able to fix the road by tomorrow changover day.

The police were stopping people at the Super U in Salins Les Thermes tonight around 10pm and there were plenty of coaches and cars on the car park there.
They asked us our destintaion and allowed us to continue towards Champagny up the road from Moutiers to Bozel, I assume the ones they had diverted onto the super U car park were trying to take the diversion up to VT, LM etc.
Looks like they could have a long wait and the car park was looking pretty full when we passed it.

From Savoie-route.com

The Main Road will remain closed all day up to the 3 resorts. The diversion will be open downhill only until 1200 today but only for light vehicles- no buses or lorries. The diversion will then open in an uphill direction from 1400. Visitors arriving to the 3 resorts are advised to stop in one of the major towns (Lyon, Chambery) until this afternoon, or preferably delay their arrival until tomorrow.

It's looking like the main road will reopen mon/ tue. God knows what the TOs are going to do with their coachloads. Someone renting our apartment is driving there now. Hopefully they will open the d96 to uphill traffic about 14.00.

There's an info feed here http://menuir.es/inforoute/en.html - noticed this while looking at the La Tania website. Wonder what transfer day in 4 weeks will have in store for the always / sideways massive travel to the mountains. As we are training it, I suspect some tunnel fire or something! It's like the natural world doesn't want us to get to the snow.

SATURDAY : On the RD96 road St Laurent de la Côte traffic is on one way. In the morning traffic only for vehicles driving down in the valley. Traffic is very heavy. Guests planning to come in the resort are encouraged to delay their arrival on Sunday

.

That's great advice for those who have just flown in. This could be carnage today.

When we had a slide on the road to Les saisies it was closed for five days as they had to secure a substantial area of hillside. It was a bigger slide though - boulders, mud and trees. You could ski over but vehicles had a very long diversion. Awful for people arriving today. Not so bad for the leavers.

Not so sure Pam - with no buses all the UK tour Op guests are going to be there for another night - and require flights later. At least the Tour Ops know and hopefully they won't delay the flights for the other returning clients. A lot of the flight delays over 28 Dec were compounded by companies delaying flights which meant others had to divert as the aircraft parking was full.

More seriously, looking at the rocks in the picture the nearest one looks to have 2 squares / blobs of concrete possibly on the bottom. If so that means these pieces may have been anchored back and the anchors have failed, maybe. Or it could be that the big rock has just knocked the small one off on the way down somewhere. Anyway it's interesting, to a boring civil engineer anyway. It must be a nightmare for them continuously monitoring the mountain sides above the passes with such difficult access etc.

Very lucky that no-one was under it. If you look at the mountains around the road the structure is full of shale and boulders rather than just solid sheets of rock.

Where the rock fall has occurred is almost the same place that a couple of big trees came down at the end of January. They blocked the road and just missed a coach. The emergency services managed to clear one lane after about an hour which released the traffic trying to get down to Moutiers and onto the N90. Mind you, when you got down the valley that was a car park with huge queues anyway.

It does make you realise that you are always at some risk in the mountains.

The alternative road they are suggesting - the D96 - is narrow and very winding in places. Drove it last summer to go from Menuires to Meribel for the air show. Fine in the summer providing you kept a sensible pace, but you wouldn't get a coach up or down it. As it was, was glad not to meet too much traffic as it's quite exposed in places.

I've heard that they are not going to allow people to drive up the D96. It will continue to be used for downhill traffic. They are hoping to fix the main road for later tonight but telling people to try to arrive tomorrow.

From the Val T official website:
Update : 28/02/2015 - 1.00pm

Because of a boulder fall which happened at Fontaine le Puits, 9 kms from Moutiers, the traffic on the road RD117 « Vallée des Belleville » is not possible in both directions until further notice.

The second road of the valley: the RD96 Saint Laurent de la Côte is still open to the descent. Traffic is slow but possible.
Warning : This road is closed for buses and trucks.

No ascent in the resorts is possible as the RD117 (the main road) is still closed. Indeed the RD96 does not allow a two-way traffic and the descent can't be interrupted.

The drain work is underway on the RD117. It will be followed by road redevelopment and clearing of the landslide. Several hours of work are required. It will not be possible to access into the resorts of Les Menuires and Val Thorens before the end of the afternoon, from 6 pm in the best case.

We strongly encourage all our customers to postpone their arrival until tomorrow.

A carpool area has been set up at the place des Arolles (opposite to the bus station in Val Thorens).
We ask people whom car isn't full to carry the persons who has no vehicles.
Thank you everybody for your help!

We have been lucky today, we got the snow train to Bourg and must have missed the traffic first thing. Our Chalet in Tignes is missing all the other guests that were due to be here this afternoon.

I can't believe the luck of the TO's this season, it seems transfer days are doomed every week.

I left Tignes at 6.45 this morning expecting heavy traffic on the way down. A bit taken aback to see miles of traffic in a gridlock between Moutiers and Cevins going up the hill.

Chambery airport was heaving with people and their luggage, especially the bar area. Eventually there was an announcement on behalf of Crystal, that they had buses and beds for the night for all of their Val Thorens clients.

My flight to Leeds left more or less on time but minus 45 passengers who couldn't get there. Not a good holiday for them as they were probably delayed a day with last Saturday's snow chaos😬

I'm sure it will be sorted by tomorrow. Lots of the cars have got out of VT and les menuires so the congestion will fade quickly.

Even if your son let's out his frustrations to you on the phone, he is with his mates and will probably look back at this as a big adventure.

he has calmed down a little now, they have been told they are leaving tomorrow. This was his first trip abroad without us and its not been a great experience for him with one thing and another. He said it was a beautiful place though so next time maybe I will go back with him.
Thanks for the replies. Very Happy
