Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Should I bet on 3 valleys or just Val thorens in April

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi everyone,

Never been to the three valleys before and I thought I would squeeze in a trip with some left over holiday on 28th March to the Val Thorens UCPA.

There's two options: I could go with full time instruction including VT pass only or, for an extra £150, I could do the "Grand Ski" which covers the whole 3 V.

Normally I'd go straight for the Grand Ski but after my catching some pretty warm weather already this year in the Alps I'm wondering if it will be worth it.

Really I have two questions:

Is VT good enough on it's own for a week if you've never been before or is the rest of the 3 V unmissable?
How will the snow conditions be in the rest of the 3 V then?

I've never skied very much late season, so finding it difficult to decide, what would you do?

Thanks!

Sorry, why is it an extra £150? It's just a lift pass upgrade, and that's nowhere near £150 in difference between local and area pass. I must be missing something...

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

what's the difference in the instruction part of the package, @Dmitri?

@Dav

Well I think the Grand Ski requires a higher ability level, and includes some guiding. Possibly this accounts for the extra or perhaps the UCPA doesn't get a discount on the whole area but only Val Thorens. UCPA have very good value packages including lift passes.

In my experience at Tignes, with the full time instruction at the higher levels, they'll take you off piste anyway, so possibly it isn't worth it, just for that. It all comes down to the area and conditions for me.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@Dmitri, if you're getting the full instruction package anyway, that sounds good. The other, if it includes guiding, would be more expensive (as apart from the guide's fee it presumably includes avvy gear too).

@Dmitri, as Pam says you may be getting lots of extra stuff for 150 extra. The difference in the price of the lift pass would only account for about a quarter of that or so, so there must be lots of extras you get. I think I'd find out exactly what extra you do get before making a decision. But if it were just a choice of upgrading the lift pass I'd definitely say to do that. There's plenty of skiing to be had in VT alone, but the 3 Valleys is an amazing ski area and it would be a shame to limit yourself.

Have a look at Les 2 Alpes as well, have had fantastic Easter skiing there with bluebird powder days both times we've been.

@davkt, Already skied L2A this new year, and had a really good time but probably too soon to go back. Cool

@pam w, It says in the blurb: "Expect to be skiing "side-country" - off-piste between and beside the pistes. You'll be skiing all over the resort and there's plenty time to relax and just enjoy the sensations, the views and just being in the mountains." Hadn't thought this would be transceiver territory but maybe you're right...... Very Happy In that case probably definitely worth the cash.....maybe I will give them a bell. Thanks

@Dav, That's what I was thinking, definitely leaning towards Le Grand Ski..........

Im thinking about UCPA(for the 5th time) to VT for around the same time, maybe the week after , any opinions of what the conditions could be?

I believe UCPA get a deal on the ValT passes, but not the 3V passes hence the rather large price difference.

If you go for ValT only, you can upgrade your pass for a day for like €24 or something via a machine in reception. I did this on the Sunday, and Wednesday (skipped the 1/2 day tuition to see a bit more of 3V).

We were doing off piste in ValT so there was easily enough to keep us occupied, but I don't think I would have been happy spending all week there if we were crunching up the motorway piste miles.

The good thing about staying in ValT only is you come back for lunch, which I like Very Happy

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Checked this out and it appears that the instruction is the same. No guiding or proper off-piste just some between the pistes work. The additional money appears to be for the lift pass. @kat.ryb, your suggestion seems to be the most sensible as I can just see how conditions are when I get there.

Thanks guys.
