Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Knee brace for lateral meniscus tear

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I have had a lateral meniscus tear in my knee for about a year and had it removed about eight months ago . Went skiing a couple of weeks ago which resulted in a huge swelling after one day and feeling of instability so I packed it in.
Have been to the physio who thinks there has been a slight recurrence and am getting strengthening exercises for it.. I am skiing with a mojo but am wondering if a brace would help any recommendations?
Hoping to return to the slopes in first week of april and I really don't want to be giving up skiing.

take up snowboarding ;o)
Don Joy knee brace may be an option, but you really want it professionally fitted & made to measure.

 Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Donjoy appear to have rather a large number of braces . I'm afraid snowboarding is beyond me more likely to take up x country again.

yup - but they are better professionally fitted than buying used off ebay!

@Mr.Egg, Think boarding was how I've irritated/injured mine Sad (free/rear leg punting).

@T Bar, Do you need anything super-duper or expensive? (Thinks most Donjoy et all are.) If you're OK to ski to some degree without causing further damage and undue suffering then a reasonable wrap-round neoprene should suffice, maybe? I use the Boots Advanced knee support, which has side springs and 2 cross straps top and bottom, but many others are available online. Mine cost about £20 ea. It does seem to give some help and support, though it's only a light thing. Keeps things warm if nothing else. Mr G also wears a neoprene wraparound for his (undiagnosed but generally bashed around) painful knees.
Else I guess it's getting a pretty expensive brace which, as already suggested, you need proper advice and fitting for (I know not where, still looking myself). There are many types for different knee problems.
Ask your physio or doctor's advice, if they can give any ( I find not, sadly).
Hopefully giving up skiing isn't necessary: but taking it easy at the moment might. That and get strengthening.
Good luck Smile

@Mr.Egg,
Yup no point in going for something pricey that doesn’t fit.

@Grizzler, Will go expensive if there is genuine benefit but not for a fancy knee warmer.

@T Bar,

Do you know how much meniscus was removed?
Is there any joint surface damage or osteoarthritis on that side of the knee?
Is the ACL intact?

Initial observations are that if just a lateral meniscus trim in an otherwise good knee you are wasting your money on anything more than a simple knee compression sleeve which may help to reduce tendency to swell. It may also make the knee feel "more secure" by enhancing proprioception ( feedback to the brain).

If the knee is worn you may have to manage it.
An ACL rupture would make it more likely for the knee to swell.
A very substantial excision can sadly allow the knee to swell.

So it is possible for a knee to swell after lateral meniscus trim in an otherwise healthy knee but unusual.
About 2 to 3% need a further trim - you may be one of those unfortunate enough to need to consider that.
If appropriate that can stop the knee swelling.

@Jonathan Bell,
Thanks for the detailed post, greatly appreciated.
The ACL is intact but I think there were some minor OA changes, I've had three shots of steroid into the knee with little effect.
I suspect it will be physio and a coping strategy but was very interested to know about the benefits or otherwise of fancy knee braces.

@T Bar,

Might be worth seeing if a second arthroscopy worth considering - gauling , i know, but in the right situation can be worth it.

Be a bit careful about multiple steroid injections, there may be better alternatives if considered a worn knee.

@Jonathan Bell,
Once again many thanks for the information. I think I will go down the intensive physio route again before seeing about another op and see what skiing at Easter holds forth, meanwhile I will avoid the fancy knee braces and stick with a neoprene sleeve and the mojo.
