Anyone right now who has laid out & can get back their
Money would be better of going to Thailand or somewhere
Hot To have a vacation.
There is nothing worse than spending your days
In a ski resort knowing you spent a fortune on your
Holiday then cannot ski
as you expected & then being ripped off allday because of
Boredem.
Ski Areas (people) have become enourmously wealthy over the
last 20 years & do not offer much in return (expensive).
You know you can visit the Alps in the summer for almost
Nothing & see greenfields.
This is the situation rigjt now but i know it can change but
not likely in next 7 days

@PeterGee, +1!!
Not sure on the purpose of this thread..... I doubt most people going away next week will appreciate the negativity being rubbed in their faces. Maybe just me! I for one will be making the very best of what we have got, in a beautiful resort with all my family around me for our first christmas away from the turkey faff and the bloody TV. Quite frankly the snow (or lack of it) is in the hands of the snow gods and we're going away on holiday whatever it chooses to do. I'm thankful that we can do so and be lucky enough to get away to the mountains. Sods law the snow isn't as good as is typical this time of year. However, C'est la vie.

@FiFi_Trixibell, we are in exactly the same boat as yourselves, our first Christmas away also. There will be skiing to be had, there will be Christmas to celebrate, it is a holiday... and I am still really looking forward to escaping the commercialised mess that is Christmas in the UK.

Initial post a tad negative but can understand the sentiment. If you can take or leave the skiing or happy to put up with massive lift queues and crowded pistes, fair enough. However, if your ski holiday is exactly that and you want to ski vast distances from early morning to last lift, it's very frustrating but what can you do? You take your chances (especially booking early in the season) but don't blame resort management or whatever.
To be honest, if you're a dedicated skier/boarder, best that you book your ski holiday later in the season.
Snow will almost certainly be better and even on off chance that it's not, what skiing is available will be much less crowded than Christmas week (half term aside).

Sorry Paul it was a useless post with zero value at all! I find snow heads a great of source of knowledge. I am feeling pretty pee'd off over this, a reasonable odds gamble that has flopped. No ones fault but life. Really don't need some divvi rubbing my nose in it though.
Yes I can book later in the season (and have ) but people need to realise holiday time skiing is popular because of work / school for some. So a simple, book later is not so helpful either. (By the March in St Anton last year was also not so good, but would welcome it now!
Overall I love Snowheads. This is the first time I have taken offence at anyone!

@stanton, You are a nugget (replace this word with something less pleasant if you choose). For many people with kids Christmas and New Year are the only opportunities to ski.
It is a gamble but I am sure resorts with snow will have a management team doing the best they can. Resorts without snow will probably provide/offer/recommend transfers to higher resorts/glaciers.

We booked Christmas this year as a way of preserving holiday - only 3 days of leave needed for a full week off (this year I also can't take leave in Jan when we normally go). Not too hacked off as we booked L2A at the very beginning of Dec when prices had fallen, but have to not think too hard about the value for money.
Will go again later in the season but do feel for people for whom this is the only possible week. Prices in Feb half term are perpetually ridiculous and because Easter is early this year availability is poor/prices are high.

Sound advice - but wait....wasn't it Boxing Day or thereabouts that they had the devaststing tsunami?
In the lap of the gods whatever you choose to do. In my book you pay your money, take your chance and make the best of what's on offer.

@Colinski, the OP is a troll. Maybe we should start a petition to get him (I presume a male) blocked or something. Clearly has no understanding of the holiday business.
When you @Colinski, posted about your issues for next week (see Flaine thread) I felt really sorry for you and your family, but could "hear" in your posts that you will enjoy the family holiday.
I have met a number of snowheads over the years. They have been great people who on the whole want to see skiing for as many people as possible and grow the sport in the UK.

Why? There is plenty of skiing around at the moment. If peope followed the mantra go-early, go-high then there isn't a problem. We have been out to Val Thorens and have people in our apartment there at the moment and the piste skiing has been good. In fact a couple of the days the week before last were exceptional. We were there at the same time as Rob Rar and were lucky to have some fantastic sun just afetr it had dumped it's 15 odd CM of snow to freshen up the pistes.
I only speak of Val Thorens, as that's the resort I know. From reading other threads there seem to be lots of other areas with perfectly good skiing at the moment as well.

Probably true but most people who booked in the 3 vallees are able to be taken to where the snow is. There are plenty of other high resort areas around with reasonable snow at the moment. You're only problem is if you picked a low resort with no access to height.
stanton wrote: |

Not sure whom you mean by ski areas (people)? A ski resort is made up of all sorts. Temporary workers. Seasonal workers. Apartment owners. Chalet owners. Hotel owners. Ski lift company people. Some are poor, some are wealthy. There isn't such a thing as a generic "ski areas (people)".
Ski areas do what they say on the tin. They take your money, they give access to ski lift and an area that when there is snow on it you can ski down. They don't offer much more as there isn't much more to offer.
I think if people wanted to go to Thailand they would have done. The only thing this might make people think about, and this happens every time there is an early snow scare, is to be careful about where they book their ski trip early and late in the season. Certainly we have already had requests in for next year in Val Thorens for early December.

And yes we are on our way on Sunday to our very first family ski holiday in the doomed grand massif, and yes we will have fun and the feedback from snow heads has been incredible., right from the first thoughts of booking to the most recent traumatic no snow news.........so a big thank you to all of you

Mind you a lot can change in a few days, one weather pressure can knock the whole thing off kilter and the high pressure may bet moved away and you could get a dump of snow, keep thinking positive folks.

Snow may not be great, but once you're in the alps you can hire car or something and get to one of teh resorts that has decent coverage.
Life is never perfect - seize the chance to explore, eat some great food, enjoy the holidays, and go hunt some snow down !
Enjoy!

Not sure this has any legs. Whilst a seemingly simple idea there are a lot of problems with it such as;
1 - the rest of the world has the same idea. Cue carnage on the roads, car parks, lifts. Of course the pistes get demolished in no time as well.
2 - extra expense. Extra lift tickets, transport. Not to mention the "hire car". Not sure evryone has one of those.
3 - Lost time. Say you are booked in Les Gets. Not so simple to get to say Verbier. Get up at 6 in the morning to beat the hordes.
4 - Most places with snow are high. Some of the slopes up there may not suit certain skiers.
5 - Most places with snow are high. Most high places suffer more lift-shutting winds.
6- Most places with snow are high. So high in fact they are above tree-line. There goes the bail-out for low-viz conditions.
Feel free to add to list of flaws with your strategy. I can think of about 5 more flaws with the idea.

@stanton, well, I run a business in the Alps and immediate family do the same and are shareholders/original land owners in a major ski area. I would submit that I have more than average experience.
Doesn't equate to knowledge or wisdom, but...
All I try to do here is generally, if grumpily, be helpful and positive. You seem to try and stir up trouble. Some interesting reactions to your own thread
Each to their own.
