Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi, I have hired skis (mainly 174cm Atomic /Rossignols) for the past 4 years and feel it's time to purchase my own skis.
Boots are Head Adaptive Edge 100s.
I only ski piste - no off-piste, powder or even all mountain - just piste.
Weight is 105 kilos - heavy I know but I ski all day without issue. Height is 182cm - thick set ex Rugby player (take that whichever way you want)
Ski level is intermediate/Advanced - will ski Black runs without a thought albeit with a stop thrown in now and again.
I would say the average day is 2-3 blacks, the rest reds.
I think I need a fairly stiff ski - my previous hire skis (given my weight) just seems to fold up too much.
Length wise 174cm just feels a little too short - I thinking 177-180cm. Something with a turn of around 18-20m. Cruisers not tight turners.
Normal DIN setting is 8-9
If anyone is of a similar build and/or have recommendations please reply - thanks

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

It's a cliché but the more Germanic brands tend to be a good place to start for heavier skiers. Something like Volkl RTM 80 in 176 or 181?
Doubt you'd go far wrong with them.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I am similar build if not heavier and found the same problem with skis as you. I have been using Rossi Experience 88's 186 for past 2/3 seasons, they are fitted with Atomic NEOX binding from my old Atomic Blackeyes which were way too soft. Skis are really stiff and heavy but I only notice that when I carry them. Once on they feel really "planted" and I do not feel their weight. For me they ski better when pushed which tells me they have the power in them to suit my physique. Given their weight and stiffness I find them easy to ski and they turn quickly and carve well too (for me). I do not off piste as such but in ankle/knee deep powder on piste and through the crud I love em.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Can't comment on the skis but would you not need a stiffer boot considering your level and weight?
NB someone will along shortly to tell me i am talking rubbish.

@Markpoint, we sound fairly similar in terms of build, skiing preference and level.
I'm 178cm and ski on Kneissl Black Star MCs at 172 with DIN set at 8. 17m radius.
They're awesome - stable at straight line speed and when cranked over and pushing. Also great in fresh snow on the piste, nice and maneuverable at slower speeds when you just fancy pottering around. That said, I do like to ski fairly "aggressively" and the Kneissls have been more than up to whatever I've been able to throw at them.

@Cacciatore, + 1 for Kneissl for stiff skis that can take some grunt.
Also look at Stoekli?

I am same build, a couple of cm shorter at 180cm. I have had a pair of head titan at 177 and I would happily get another pair. They ski really well.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

doing a search on this topic as I have had my Rossignol experience 80's for some time now & fancy a change.
Has anything changed in last 5 years or are the Germanic brands still better for the heavier chap.
