Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@Sarge McSarge, it can really vary, especially in February! Generally -5 to -10 I'd say. It can get colder, down to -15 or so in Niseko, although the further into Feb you get, the less likely it'll be that cold. In Furano it'll be colder than Niseko. It can get down to -20 or so, but again, less likely later in the month.

A decent facemask/balaclava is useful. Especially if you're planning on getting faceshots!

Happy to help Sarge!

First clear sunny day since the snowfall earlier in the week. The hills around here are looking very nice with a bit of snow cover on them.

Power lines everywhere in Japan, getting in the way!

Looking north to the Kamoi ski area.

It looks like rain at the weekend, but probably more snow next Tuesday...

We had some snow on Tuesday and Wednesday. Up to 30cm in Asahikawa area and probably more in the mountains. Some friends scored some early turns at Canmore ski hill, close to Asahidake.

We were hiking this weekend in the Hidaka mountains, up around 1,000m with views of bigger 1,800m+ mountains, but no sign of snow on them yet (South Central Hokkaido)

It looks like we should get some snow from Thursday next week. A few ski areas are scheduled to open next weekend, so keeping fingers crossed, but not overly optimistic. Hopefully we'll get enough new snow over the next 2 weeks for the main opening weekend of most ski areas on Nov 22/23rd....

@Mike Pow, Have you arrived!? You usually seem to time your arrival perfectly with the start of the winter!

As predicted, snow everywhere yesterday. It's still snowing here this morning and looks to continue. Maybe 10cm or so in town. With another day and night of this we could potentially get some skiing at the weekend....

Planning on heading over early next week for Opening Day on 21st.

But it looks like it could warm up between now and then.

Waiting on the call to see if Opening Day is realistic or will it be pushed back.

And at Sapporo Teine for us today! Looked really nice in Hirafu yesterday though, a lot lighter than what we had today. We should've gone up yesterday!

The snow cover was decent after the snowfall we've had over the past few days. A little heavy, but it should make a decent base for the winter.

Skinning up the road, that they'd very kindly pisted for us!

Couple of action shots.

There's already a good 40-50cm in the Highland area of Teine. We are expecting more snow on Tuesday and Wednesday, before a warm blast and some rain on Friday. That should be followed by more snow on Saturday, so I'm feeling cautiously optimistic for a decent opening weekend!

We didn't get quite as much snow as expected this week. Sapporo Teine has been doing ok though and actually brought it's opening day forward to today (Friday). I believe Kiroro and Sapporo Kokusai opened today too as planned.

Looks like Niseko has postponed their opening until next weekend. (And I think Rusutsu too)

We're heading up to Teine this weekend. Saturday looks like we'll get some rain, but Sunday and Monday (public holiday) look like they'll be ok. Temperatures will drop again next week, although there isn't a huge amount of snow on the forecast.....

Only two runs on offer at Kiroro today, but the snow was surprisingly good.

Warmed up around lunchtime. Snow then light drizzle for 10 mins then back to light snow.

Things not going so well at Teine. Open today but closed as of tomorrow until they get more snow. A fair bit of rain came down today and the base was very thin. Not much more in the forecast for next week, and a nasty warm spell around Thursday. Buqger.

Today at Teine. Even though the snow was slow and wet, we had a fun few hours on empty trails when the sun appeared.

Not much new snow to report over last week. Other than Kiroro, Kokusai, and Kurodake (maybe having a name starting with 'K' helps.....?!) everywhere has delayed their opening days.

On Monday night the weather changed and finally the cold air and snow arrived. Snow in most parts of Western Hokkaido yesterday and overnight, which is forecast to continue until the weekend. By which time a decent base should have built up and we'll be able to get the season started again!

Shame to have missed you today Mike!

We had about 10cm at home today, and there was still fresh snow as we drove past Sapporo. But going past Otaru to Kiroro was a blast of full on Hokkaido winter! Kiroro was great. A nice dump last night and through the day gave us soft fresh and deep powder on the side of the trails. A bit too much sasa to venture too far off the beaten track, but there was more than enough snow to keep us entertained.

Tomorrow we're going Teine. Snow won't be as good, but should be a fun day with a big crew.

Sick photo!

As expected, our snow at Teine was nowhere near as good as that! It was windy yesterday too, so the morning was spent building a jump as the main lift was on wind hold. The afternoon was fun, with boot deep powder and clearing skies.

The snow has been falling heavily to the north of Sapporo (around us!) so Yubari and Kamui etc will hopefully have started to get a decent base by now. Our town hill looks like it should open soon, judging by the amount of snow I had to clear from around my place this morning!

Put together some video from the weekend:

Been a decent week for snow here in Central. It's snowed more or less non stop since the weekend, giving us enough for the local hill (Iwamizawa Greenland) to open. Mount Racey over at Yubari opened yesterday too.

It's kind of raining at the moment though, but still cold, so in the hills this will be snow. Nice heavy snow that should crush down the sasa bamboo and make a lot more of the off piste accessible.

I got upside down too yesterday. (Bit of a personal hurdle that one, after breaking my hand on a frontflip on opening day last year!)

Had a great day at Yubari yesterday. Mount Racey only opened up on Wednesday, but it hasn't stopped snowing since. It was really deep and super light thanks to the cold temperatures. We didn't really need to venture off the trails at all to get knee and sometimes waist deep snow!

Today we've got clear skies. By the sounds of it the Sapporo area is getting pounded today though, which will be good for Teine, as they still need a good dump of snow.

It looks like a big blizzard will be arriving on Wednesday which should set the weekend up nicely. We're probably going to head up to Asahikawa to hit Kamui.
