Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Black Crows Corvus 185 Vs Black Crows Nocta 188 2014

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Dear all,

Does anyone have experience using either the Black Crows Nocta or Corvus ski? I am currently struggling to find any decent reviews of the skis apart from the usual Black Crows blurb on their site.

I am 5'8 (173cm) and around 85 kg and would consider myself an aggressive advanced skier. Last seasons ski Dynastar Legend Pro Rider 105 at 175cm (should have got the 185). I'm looking for a powerful off piste charging ski capable of holding an edge in steep icy couloirs but also float well in powder. I will be fixing Marker F12 EPF touring bindings to whichever ski I purchase for the occasional tour.

My two main questions would be:

1 - Is the Nocta at 128 underfoot capable of holding an edge on steep icy slopes, or is it just a dedicated powder ski?

2 - Is the Corvus going to be too stiff to be a playful powder ski?

Any thoughts, comments or advice would be much appreciated.

If anyone is happy to do an in depth review of either ski then even better!

Thanks

I skied the 185 Corvus for a season. It's a great old-school feeling ski and was fun skiing powder for that type of ski. The latest version has tip rocker so would perform even better.

1. Yes but not as comfortably as the Corvus.
2. No but it'll be less fun than the Nocta.

Very Happy

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Seems kinda odd that you'd be looking at a 120mm+ ski for icy couloirs? Rather you than me wink

I haven't skied it, but from fondling it in a shop I think the Nocta will be too soft to charge outside of powder.

What about the Whitedot Ragnarok or 4FRNT Renegade? Should give the best of both worlds re. powder and charging.

Moment are also doing a limited run of the old 190cm 118mm version of the Bibby Pro (renamed the Blister Pro) this season, which IMO is pretty much perfect for general EU offpiste, though as it's a limited run I suspect you'd have to buy it from the States rather than through their EU dealers, which could get pricey.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

meh - Pretty much summed up what I was thinking !

Serriadh - Yep thats just it, I think the Nocta is going to be too wide.

Just done a little bit more research and Black Crows are bringing out a new ski called the Artis new for this season which looks to be a bit of a crossover between the two. essentially a more playful version of the Corvus. Could be the one!

The obvious answer is "buy two pairs of skis", of course snowHead

Any particular reason you're attached to Black Crows? Almost everyone does a nice ski in the 105-115 range that will work well on variable snow and still be nice in powder. Might even be stuff still on sale, though I think you've missed the big summer stock selloffs and there won't be much left that's cheap and isn't very long or very short.
