Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Because there's not an outbreak but merely a couple of isolated cases, it is entirely practical and cost effective to do all this stuff "just in case". People aren't actively shedding viral particles until quite late in the disease, and even when they do the virus won't survive long outside of the human body except in a generous quantity of bodily fluids, but their places of residence will be decontaminated just in case. There's no evidence that cats or dogs can catch or carry the disease, but they will be quarantined just in case, because doing so is cheap compared to the alternative.

ansta1, peanuthead,

"may imply it is more infectious than thought" + "there have to be questions asked about that Texas hospital"

Indeed.

Although it rather sounds on the limited info/rumour reported that the protocols used are not quite as robust as suggested/believed.

An interesting note here http://theness.com/neurologicablog/index.php/ebola-and-human-error/ plus a review from Johns Hopkins posted in the comments (which I haven't had time to watch yet).

northernsoulboy, not according to the CDC or the WHO - but I am guessing that they are considering more initial symptoms.

I am also guessing that the chest pain and coughing in the Mayo article is to do with internal bleeding, by which point, you're not going to be heading to the beach. Or the airport.

under a new name, yep, as I said above, it's not a common symptom, but it is a symptom. I suspect the CDC is trying to give out the minimum level of information, focusing on the major symptoms, so as to reduce the size of the panicking queues at A&E (or ERs)?

Re air travel and CDC, and further to the BBC link someone posted earlier (apols if I've missed it elsewhere on this thread), it transpires that the nurse in the States with ebola called the CDC, told them she had been in contact with an ebola patient, and that she now had a temperature, and that she was flying, and they apparently said, yep, go ahead. Which doesn't fill me with too much confidence in the CDC.

I think the plane thing is a bit misleading though. It sort of feeds into our idea of an global pandemic facilitated by air travel. Probably worse to travel by bus - packed in closer, pushing the bell etc

Slightly off topic, but aside from the additional checks for Ebola, these measures could benefit a lot of people who've contracted malaria and go on undiagnosed for a while without getting treatment. My brother in law was carted off the runway at Heathrow a few years ago with cerebral malaria and would have died, had his symptoms not been recognised by a doctor onboard who had him transferred to the hospital for tropical disease.

Aids, SARS, Avian flu etc etc Ebola ..... The scariest bit about Ebola is that it seems to be infecting by media contact, then affecting peoples brains, making them prone to delusional apocalyptic thoughts and paranoia.

My hubby has been playing Plague Inc on his tablet for quite a while now. He passed on the link for the app to one of our local GPs who has suggested it would be a good idea to send it to the CDC to show them what happens when people get on planes.

Spain now investigating 4 new suspected ebola cases. The case of the Nigerian on the airplane sounds least likely. One who was being monitored due to contact with infected nurse will hopefully turn out to be the 'flu but would be very concerning if not. The other 2 look like being the real deal unfortunately (one in Madrid, other Tenerife)

It's only unexpected if you never watch Fox. They have some shows which are polemical, and others which are not. My only quibble with that is where he says she flew 'before she showed symptoms'. That is contradicted by the CBS tweet, which says both that she had a temp and that she called CDC to tell them.

I don't know who is right, and I also don't know how much it matters in terms of transmissibility (but you sound like you would trust CBS over Fox).

https://gma.yahoo.com/clipboard-man-without-hazmat-suit-ebola-flight-explained-123300294--abc-news-health.html

But a short answer: if clipboard man isn't actually having to engage in any contact with the victim, who is wrapped up in her own biohazard outfit, then there's no way he could catch anything unless she were literally exploded next to him.

The other folk in hazmat outfits might have to actually touch her in person if anything bad were to happen, hence the need to be all dressed up ahead of time.

Yeah I believe he was just fine and safe, but explanation is simply ridiculous. They have limited vision and mobility... no shi**t but what if something a bit more serious would happen? They would still put some "protocol supervisor" without suit there and change them every few minutes when they would be dropping dead? I though these people should have at least some sort of training and should be at least somehow used to handle these sort of working conditions. But if they can't handle simple escort without supervision of someone without suit, how they could deal with real situation when they would actually need to do something more serious then escort someone over 10 stairs to plane?

Right, so you have literally no idea who these people are, what they're doing, the equipment they're using, the circumstances they're operating under or the training they've had. Well done.

Serriadh, no I really have no idea who they are, but if they can't make simple escort from ambulance car to plane without supervision and help from someone without suit, they obviously didn't have any training at all. I had my share of using gas masks and protection suits back in old days, and yes I know it's not same as without it, but it's also not something impossible to do. But main point is, what if it's about something else and not ebola? How would they operate in circumstances where you can't have someone without suit supervising your movements? Well based on this, they wouldn't operate at all, if they are not able to do simple task as escort without someone's supervision.
