Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Europe Ski Trip 2016 (OK so Planning ahead)

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Morning all.

So, im looking at ski trip for 2016. I Like to head out with my the week after new year for a week to 10 days with my brother (we are both advanced on piste, he doesn't like off piste, so best to avoid). This year heading to Tignes (love it there) but thinking of a change for next year. Have absolutely no preference, and quite happy slumming it, or fancy hotel (cost not an issue) - its all about the skiing.

Second hol of the year will be the snowHead BB so will keep italy for then.

SSooooo where would you recommend??

Any snowHead with apartments, feel free to plug yourself here, as I like to book with snowHead

If it's just the two of you and you don't mind sharing a room, book last minute to wherever the good snow is!

Wish I could do that - but usually visiting a specific resort, travelling with large group, or am just away for a weekend (weekend bookings are harder to do last minute as you usually have to DIY, rather than find a spare week place with a TO).

Harry Flashman, Sadly I do have to plan a llooonngg way in advance. Despite what some people think, running your own company does not mean you can take time off whenever you like (perhaps its because im a control freak!)

PaulC1984, Austrian Zillertal? Good extensive piste skiing up and down the valley with several different ski areas e.g Hochzillertal (Kaltenbach/Hochfugen), Arena (Zell am Ziller), Mayrhofen, and the Hintertux glacier as snow insurance. Your lift pass includes bus and narrow gauge Zillertalbahn train travel up and down the valley between these individual areas, so it's easy to have different days at different areas.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

you can book the time off but decide where you go at short notice? you're planning to be away for one of the quietest weeks in the season so shouldn't be too hard to find accommodation at short notice

This. What a shame to plan a holiday half a century in advance and have no snow!

pam w, true, still would be nice to hear people thoughts on resorts. Having always stuck to tignes, winter park CO and Scotland, despite many years skiing, my knowledge on other resorts is slim to non existent!

PaulC1984, there are hundreds; hard to know where to start, really. Give us a bit of a clue as to what you like, and don't like. For example, if ski in/out is essential, that rules out lots of nice places.

Not bothered about ski in/out. Got to be good in jan, 80%piste bits of tree skiing for the rest. Couldnt care less about apres/ architecture. Lovely scenery and quiter good quality slopes are the key for me

PaulC1984, take a look at the Hochkönig (particularly the Maria Alm end) for good cruising and tree-lined slopes with jaw-dropping beautiful scenery plus only an hour transfer from Salzburg with no winding mountain roads. Schladming, Wagrain, Fieberbrunn are all other contenders within an hour or so of Salzburg Airport. At that time of year they are all very quiet as the main Christmas/New Year rush (particularly the later Russian dates) are over, and the Half Term season has not started.

PaulC1984,
I would go along with the idea that you can book the time early but book the place last minute, there is often pretty big variations in snow quantity in January through different parts of the alps.

Most non-major resorts should ve farily quiet in January but for a few different places with trees and some decently attractive extensive skiing at a reasonable level you could try.

Grand Massif, Portes de Soleil or Serre Chevalier in France.

Verbier Davos or Flims in Switzerland

And I'm sure Samerberg Sue s suggestions in Austria will be excellent I have been going to Ischgl, Galtur and Kappl in recent years which are good but most of it is a bit more above the tree line than many Austrian resorts.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much
