Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@kitenski, Are doing the MS or EMS ? That kit list is for the MS.

When I did my MS we didn't do a lot of touring bit it seems to be quite variable. For the EMS it would seem that you do a lot more, so in terms of ski's and bindings it's what you are prepared to lug up hill. Obviously heavier will be harder work.

@kitenski, what did you use on the all the tours you did in preparation for your EMS? That should give you some idea if your setup works for you. wink

Helpful answer - that setup sounds like hard work. On EMS, you will be doing 1000m+ of ascent per day and still expected to be mentally functioning at the top of your game.

Level 3 Mountain Safety is much less demanding.

@kitenski, yes, I'm sure that will all be fine. The crampons is one of things you need but probably won't use.

BTW, the EMS (Euro Mountain Security) is the L4 course. BASI L3 Mountain Safety is the name of the course you're doing.

I've just got back from Chamonix for my L3 Mountain Safety. We only did a bit of skinning and most people were on alpine boots.

We did put our ski crampons on once and in the other group a chap didn't have any and was sent off the hill to go and buy them; the guide wasn't impressed apparently. One chap in our group had some, but when the gradient got steeper and we put them on, he realised that they weren't universal and his Dynafit crampons didn't fit his marker bindings!

I did my MS in Courchevel. We had a couple of days where we did some skinning - perhaps 800m max elevation gain on the longer of the two days. Not especially steep; did require kick turns, but not crampons.

cheers @rob@rar, and @abd, it was more the skins slipping due to them being split in the middle, hence the question about steepness!

@abd, care to write a quick (or better still longer) overview of the course, what you did each day etc?

@kitenski, that setup will be fine for MS but I had a similar setup for my EMS training (Volkl Mantras Dukes) and just about died. everyone else was on dynafit setups and they work much easier for touring. Not just the weight savings but also how the pin bindings move when skinning is very different and easier than Dukes. Hard to explain but the Dynafits stride better...

@kitenski, soz assumed you may be up for it at some point as you like the off piste stuff... @abd no I got a couple in but got weathered off on several occasions and have given up on it for time being. did the teach week instead of the EMS assessment and now working on tech skills and GS training.

@skimottaret, yeh but I'd need to pass the whole l3 to get onto the course, could spend that money on two weeks or more in Japan!!!

@kitenski, no you don't... you can take the EMS after completing the MS and 200 hours of teaching afaik

We run a telemark club at Hemel on a Sunday morning on a bit of an ad hoc basis at the moment. We have gear but mainly our own spare stuff. Currently looking at grants to buy a selection of sizes.
A great way to learn as we can start from never been on teles before right up to BASI L3

Best tip I got off a trainer was in the L 2 wrap up.....do the level 3 but do a season first
I found after a ful season I was in self teach learning style. But get a check off a similar level skier or coach every now and then
The season was skiing most days just practicing and even on the second to last day I discovered a new feeling of toe pressure when flexed. Had to wait till next season to explore it

Long shot this but can I interest anyone in a L3 Tech course 9-13 March in Chatel? Some guys here are trying to get BASI to run one but are short of 1-2 people. There'd also be the possibility of a L3 training week the preceding week with Andy Freshwater and Peter Kuwall of BASS Chatel subject to demand. And I would be really happy to help any Snowheads sort accommodation, passes, transfers etc etc snowHead

First rung on the ladder - UKCP L1 - done, so now thinking about what to do next. Second discipline seems like the best choice, and I think I've settled on adaptive. Having earlier ruled it out on the grounds that I'd be unlikely to use it, I've come to realise that it would probably be very useful in my regular teaching and everything I've seen from people who've done it suggests they found it a good course to do.

The question I have is what I could do to prepare for it? One relatively straightforward thing would be to ask DSUK if I can shadow some sessions at Hemel. Any other suggestions from those who've done the course? I've read through this thread which suggests passing with no experience of adaptive skiing is possible, but some of it is now out of date (BASI have changed the structure of the course) and so wondering if there is any more current advice.

@kieranm, get and read the manual as well as Dave Worthington's book from the other thread... lots to take in during the week.. When we did it they used the PSIA manual not sure what is the material now but the PSIA is worth having even if basi have their own now...

Is anyone planning on doing any of the Level 3 Mountain Safety course in the 2016 season? I see the dates are out...and I'm thinking of booking onto one, Verbier, Chamonix or Courchevel, choices, choices!!

If I was going to do any course, it would probably be that one. I'm hoping to squeeze in an adaptive L1 this summer or autumn, but chatting with another instructor who did the Mountain Safety and found it both enjoyable, accessible, and interesting, I'm quite tempted.

Hi All, Have been working on developing some basic ski fitness tests and will be collecting data and determining averages for genders, ages etc.

out of interest why choose 1.5 miles? I have times for my fastest mile, half mile, 5km and 10km run but never 1.5 miles!!

I'll give some of them a try, shame you don't have a 10 mile bike Time Trial as I've just started doing them Very Happy

Have to admit I'd find it an effort to run 1.5 miles, more due to lack of running efficiency than cardio as putting in a decent effort on the bike, or steep uphill walk, for a similar timeframe would be ok.

@kitenski, Not my choice, I would have preferred to use the Cooper Test which is the max distance in 12 minutes but the New Gen guys used 1.5 miles as it is used by the Military for their entrance exams and a lot of data exists for that distance. Also Im not a fan of the rowing test as it needs specialised kit but at the end of the day you can do as many as you like and opt out of others. I won't be doing any running for instance with crap knees...

^ pedantic point : running is arguably good for your knees ? Wink
(though i obviously don't know your specific case / issue)

dynamic movements help build up the the pro-receptors which fire quickly and hold the muscles / knee together.
if you just cycle <etc> then this builds muscle endurance - but does very little for building stability in the knee.
I have come back from 2 knee injuries. after each running was tricky to start off with.
however I have no doubt that persisting with it has made my knees stronger and less prone to injury longer term.

if athletes don't do any dynamic movements, such as running, then they will have weak knees.
it is a common fallacy that running is bad for the knees (it is actually very good!).

@Haggis_Trap, i havent had any major ligament problems but have meniscus tears and patella tendon issues and arthritis. when i run i just end up with swollen knees, tend to do more squats and lunges and use a bike for cardio..

Further, when related to skiing, is that biking is predominantly a concentric action on the quads and so does little to prepare for the eccentric quad strength required when skiing.

Even if you did have a time for your fastest 1.5 mile, you might not be able to use it for this. Reading the instructions you have to do the exercises in a single session, though @skimottaret is happy for you to miss some of them out by the sound of it.
