I have never had an issue (ryanair) this past 4 years, but this year coming through manchester I was told tennis rackets were sports equipment and had to be checked in (they were inside hand luggage). I'm assuming they would say the same with ski boots, and am now considering checking them in.

Oooh gosh, it never occurred to me that carry boots in hand luggage would be an issue!
I may need to book an extra case!

I don't think it is anymore maybe, but in the security scare heights they seemed to go through a phase of being banned and I haven't tried again since....Check weights/dimensions though - can be a problem with some boots/bags.
Thanks for the feedback guys, monarch and neilson both seem fine in terms of t&c - just wondering what people were finding in reality...

Surely if it's within the hand luggage size / weight limits it's no issue.
was the Ryanair tennis racket a problem because it was oversize as hand luggage?
or are you suggesting that if it is classed as "sports equipment" it cannot go hand luggage whatever?
golf ball anyone? tennis shoe? tiddlywink? well, it is Ryanair we are talking about.

It wasn't Ryanair who stopped me with tennis racquets , it was security at Manchester airport. As long as your bag fits Ryanair don't know what's in your bag. The racquets weren't oversize or overweight. We didn't have time to check them in so we ended up throwing them in the bin. Ryanairs website does mention tennis racquets as not allowed , but not ski boots specifically. I suspect I simply got a grumpy jobs worth security person.

Ski boots are no issue. The bag weighs less than 10kg

I know weight is not the issue, its whether one comes across an airport security guard who decides (like my tennis racquets at manchester 3 months ago) that the sports equipment cant go as hand luggage and needs to be checked in (with resultant cost)

BA NCE-LGW, mid-December, hand carried snowboard boots not in a bag onto the plane as part of hand luggage allowance without a problem. Even with a particularly exothermic pair of socks stuffed in them

its not down to the airline but the security staff at the airport. I common bugbear amongst climbers is not being allowed to pack ropes as hand luggage "because they could be used to restrain and tie up aircrew" However I'm sure an unrestricted bag of plastic cable ties would be more practical for this than a 70m 10mm climbing rope (or a tennis racquet for that matter)

We flew Luton to Salzburg last Saturday on Easyjet and asked check in staff and onboard staff whether we could have bought boots in our hand luggage (we'd already packed 'em in checked luggage) and they both said it was fine provided the boot (or other carry on) bag was within their size limits. Onboard staff reminded us that they have no weight restriction for cabin bags so next time I fly, if you're sitting in the aisle seat next to me you may want to wear your helmet. Just in case.

On the rocks, I flew back from Australia with all my krabs racked on slings over my shoulders and under my coat to save on luggage weight. Before 9/11 obviously lol.
