Verbier 4 Vallées 2013-14

gwatts10, If you are with a family and not very interested in après scene you might like La Tzoumaz. Ski-wise it's close enough to Verbier and if you pass allows it you can ski there and then come back via Vallon d'Arby or take a bus from Medran and up the Savoleyres gondola and then ski down. But after lifts close Tzoumaz is far away from Verbier as it's in a different valley and taxi ride is expensive, but you can also use public transport and come back via Martigny.

thanks all for the tips on La Tzoumaz , we are a group of about 40 in about 10 different chalets all close to the gondola , we have stayed in Verbier several times so have an acquaintance with the area , we will make our own entertainment and believe me we can party better than Brighton or Bournemouth on our own .

Lots of fresh snow in Verbier this morning, visibility wasn't great but it helped keep the crowds away. After a few runs in the main sector I thought I'd try the savolyres/la tzoumaz areas for the first time due to the lower elevation and trees. Very nice but maybe not quite as quiet as I'd been led to believe, but not too bad really.

The sun came out for the afternoon and it was glorious. Went down Tortin and it was nice to do it largely lump free for a change.

Verbier: Pistes are perfect.
Snowed all day yesterday, but teeny weeny flakes so accumulation was not huge, maybe 20cms.

Bruson today...delivered.
Sunny, usual crowds, superb powder stashes all over the place.

I don't have any great desire to return to Verbier, I've skied as much of it as my limited ability permits, and I'm not keen on the village, but Bruson...what a lovely place that is. Very Happy

Busy old day today. About 15-20cm overnight and an inversion above 2,000m. Some lovely skiing to be had if you know where to go to avoid the crowds. Stunning Creblet at the end of the afternoon, the mist had kept people out of there most of the day so we had pretty much untracked snow all the way to Carrefour.

Looks like it could be the last powder day for a while looking at the forecast.

I had the weekend at Verbier. Saturday morning was spent at Bruson in deep fresh powder both on and off the pistes, and being Bruson it was pretty quiet too. Moved over to Verbier in the afternoon and the sun came out and everything was in glorious conditions. The weather had probably put off a few daytrippers so it was queue-free too.

There was lots of thick low cloud on the Sunday and most of the skiing up to Attelas itself was in too poor visibility to enjoy. Lac de Vaux was however in clear skies so as good as it was, it seemed that most of the 4 Vallees had headed there with enormous queues. Instead I headed off to the Siviez/Plan de Fou area where it was overcast but clear and a lot quieter.

Stunning spring conditions at the moment. Coverage is holding up well and quiet midweek pistes are in very good nick.

Looking at heading over for a week but my pal doesn't finish Uni till the 13th April, Is it likely to be okay snow-wise say 13th-17th April?

Went last year late march and it was fine!

Thanks

j4ck100, tough to tell to be honest. We're due a decent dump over the weekend, but if it warms up again that won't last very long.

The Verbier Extreme has been postponed until Wednesday to take advantage of the new snowfall.

Probably 25cm fell yesterday in total. A good top up, it was a bit wet around 15-1800 so there are some glassy pistes lower down. Conditions above 2,000 should be super for the next few days.

Great stuff, sounding prosperous then. Does anyone know if the pistes are substantially busier on weekends at this time of year? We're getting the ferry on Friday 11th, just not sure whether to chill on the sat sun then ski the following week, or ski then chill at the end as can really only afford 4 days

Cheers

j4ck100, busier then weekdays, but not really that busy unless there has been a big powder dump the night before with sunshine forecast for the day which might attract a few more locals. Even so, they won't be close to peak season levels. I was there the first week in April last year for 9 days, coinciding with Easter, in glorious sunshine pretty much all week and hardly queued at all.

I'd pick and choose your days by the weather forecast that week rather than anything else.

Sunny

Top to bottom 100% coverage on main Verbier side.

Front face of Savolyeres looks pretty done, but the main side will be fine.

Nobody about.

Lovely piste skiing, only slushy in direct south facing and at the very bottom

rungsp, yes, concur with all that, I was there yesterday. The runs around the Siviez sector were starting to suffer a bit, but perfectly skiable.

Tortin was good fun - probably fairly hard packed first thing but by the time I went through at about lunchtime it was softened up enough to make the massive bumps fairly forgiving, although not at all slushy. A few small rocks showing through in small parts of the initial traverse, but otherwise good.

Over in the Printze sector, temps are high. Runs to Les Collons, Veysonez and Piste de L'ours still open but slushy in the afternoon. Still some good end of season skiing to be had, but with temps predicted to remain high its best to be on the first lift. Had a drive over to Siviez today to with a beginner so they could get a few hours in on the nice long blue there, still some good snow but the links to/from Nandez are closed and the new gondela's cabins have been removed. The pass office in Les Collons today suggested we buy our passes only until Sunday and then top up on the same rate after then.

How is the Verbier sector looking, could be looking to ski there next week.

Stayed around the Thyon area today. The piste cover is reasonable but turned to slush early. Skied with our beginner friend on the short blues and reds at the top of the piste de Veysonez which held up until about 1330.

Also skid down to Veysonez with the boys, top 2/3 was great but a slush fest at the bottom. There is a T bar that starts about 1/3 from the bottom which would be perfect to avoid the worst of the run, it should really be a chair through. It would really ease the bottleneck at the bottom.

Will try the piste de l'ours tomorrow and maybe further afield.

Lovely and sunney today but, trop chaud, trop chaud, trop chaud.

Verbier is holding up fairly well, but temperatures are very high. Mont Gele tram is still running and snow is reasonable. Pistes icy in the morning but soften up quickly, from 2 pm it's a slush fest. Doubt it will get any better this season.

The focus of life shifts off the pistes this weekend for cow fighting in Le Châble. Clear skies, summer temperatures and a glass of fendant or two is the agenda of the day.

The piste de l'ours is holding up well with the exception of the last few hundred meters, most of the Thyon side is slush by about 10:30, the Les Chottes area is holding up well and very quiet so will aim for there today. It looks like we had very little re freeze lower down overnight and some light rain at the moment so we will see how long we manage to stay out. Still, it's better than being at work

First day today did Verbier, Thyon & Siviez, not too shabby although next week would be a push I think. Took some yellow trail that basically turned into grass half way so had a nice 20 minute walk with all the clobber! Any recommendations on where to head tomorrow ?

Thanks

Great day today, out early and the hit the reds and blues around Thyon until 1030 before heading over to the area near Les Chottes restaurant where the snow is holding up really well. The link red down from Thyon was icy so we may leave it a bit later before heading over tomorrow. The best bit is that there is no one else here, it is so quiet.

This is the first year we have not put the boys in ski school and it is nice to be skiing with them through the day. We will put them back in next year though as they are skiing lazier and lazier as the days go on

We got back about 1500 through a massive slushfest which was to be expected and sadly the snow at the base of Les Collons 1850 outside the apartment is disappearing.

Will assess it on a day to day basis and perhaps go over to the higher blues and reds in the Verbier sector if we need to.

Post cow fighting early run up the Val de Bagnes to clear the head and then some lovely skiing on classic spring snow. Firm in the morning, slush in the afternoon. Chassoure-Tortin on the decidedly firm side at the top. Combatazaline was lovely around 1400. Just holding on to snow into Verbier, but probably for a couple more days only.

Must have been a cold night!

Pistes were ICY this morning, and although full scale sunshine it was not very warm, with quite a cold wind.

Bottom of the mountain slushing up by 1pm, but from Ruinnettes upwards anything that was not fully facing the sun remained icy-icy.

Perfectly possible to ski all the way back to Verbier (Medran). Full width snow, slushy at the bottom....but it is mid April!

Yesterday was the last day the Mayenzet was running - it was just too muddy at the access point. It's a sad loss as we now need to descend to Verbier if we ski below Ruinettes, and Fontenays has been really good the last few days.

Headed across to the Printze sector yesterday where the pistes were in great condition form mid morning and there was no one around.

Col des Gentianes and Chassoure-Tortin seem to be closed in the early morning until they soften a bit. The bumps on Tortin are evil, icy shark's fins.

Had a great day again yesterday. Skied both the Piste de L'Ours and Veysonez between 10:30 and 11:30. Both were in great condition with the exception of about 50m of boiler plate on Veysonez near the bottom where they are building new chalets.

Skied over to Siviez in the afternoon, conditions near Les Chottes are still good although the black off the old 2 man chair(is this the last 2 man fixed chair in the 4 Vallees now) was a bit icy. Over in Thyon, the front of the mountain is great until about 11 ish, the Muraz red being especially good. 2 days left to ski, amazed how much of the area is holding up and that we have been able to ski till 4PM the previous 2 days. An afternoon of to let the knees recover today though.

Great day skiing with Steve Sparks and assorted others.

Hard, icy in the morning, soft and slushy in the later afternoon....with every gradient between the two at some point.

Nice lunch at Les Chottes, complete with a rather good Alpenhorn player and a free to use hot tub on the restaurant terrace.
Only Chicken John (don't ask) went in, after a comedy few minutes when he got locked into the old bubble lift that was being used as changing facilities.

You can still ski down to Medran but it is amazing what two days of sunshine have done to the snow since I posted on tuesday.

For those who don't like slush, today's rain made the formerly firm pistes rock hard and lightening fast. Snow line due to drop tonight, but I don't think it's going to come to much.

Time to start moving skis into the garage, sorting out the bikes and waiting for the return of summery weather.

Steve Sparks, Snowed over in Thyon down to 1800 this afternoon for a couple of hours. Probably about 1cm so not a lot in the big scheme of things but the lack of slush was welcome this afternoon.

We had the Thyon area almost to ourselves this afternoon, no one really about. Skied the Piste de l'Ours at about 3 30, in great condition apart from a soft last few hundred meters. Not bad going considering the base is about 1450m and it is the 18th of April.

Last day tomorrow, but what a great 12 days for this time of year. Managed to learn where the snow would stay later in the afternoon and whilst I have always enjoyed skiing around Les Chottes area, it is even better to know that it keeps its snow at this time of year.

Hi Gilberts Fridge, we drove over to Le Collons yesterday to see some friends and had a bit of a ski in the afternoon.
We did the Piste de l'Ours 3 times in a row at about the same time as you...hope we didn't crowd it out for you!

Snow was really not too bad and the top half of Etoygen (spelling) was actual fresh snow and really rather nice.

Snow line almost down to Le Chable overnight....not much of it, but it exists.
