Started snowing at apres, then stopped.
but now its snowing at a nice steady pace, and looks like it will keep it up through the night, not exactly going to be a powder day tomorrow, but all those lucky uninjured people will have the pistes topped up nicely and will just add to the pleasure of skiing in the sun for the rest of the week! |
There was powder for the finding today - depending on where the wind had dropped the snow.

Even though it's supposed to be snowing right now there isn't a cloud in the sky.
It is a bluebird cold day though, I expect the pistes will be in perfect condition after the few cm's we've had.

Cold, but sunny today. Pistes in great condition. Got some fresh tracks in a couple of couloirs this afternoon.

Perfect weather. The north face of the Grand Balme was boot deep powder in places.
Very good day's skiing.

Currently snowing and Meteo France calling for 15-40cm tonight.... Pretty good off-piste at the moment (in a generally skied out 'chalky snow' kind of way) with some good patches of soft stuff to be found.
Vallon de la Sache, Petit Balme, Lavachet, Spatule, Cairn & Tour de Pramecou/Balme have all given some good skiing over the last 2 days, should be even better tomorrow!

Driven off the mountain around 2pm - wind & snow shotblasting exposed skin. I'm guessing we've had a couple of feet plus since Sunday.

stewart woodward, yesterday we saw a boarder set off a very big avalanche riding a couloir right of mickeys ears, again was lucky to outrun it.
Many avalanches under the grand prix chair in Val. Saw someone get buired as he was traversing across and the slope above him slabbed off. Luckily his hand wasn't covered and someone pulled him out sharpish. Worrying day though.

For any off-piste-heads out there: skied the following today in good conditions ***warning: this does not mean they are safe etc etc etc***
North Face Pramecou and North Face Grande Balme both had excellent soft snow still. Vallon de la Sachette some patches of soft. Mostly 'chalky' on the top 'steeper' pitches.
3500 couloir off the Motte in excellent condition...good spring snow and just a small step down to get in (and a warm skin back out again. 'North Face' Petite Balme also holding good soft snow but also plenty bumps as its seen a lot of traffic.
More snow due tomorrow night...wooha!
(But be careful out there, definitely dodgy still in places.)
Pics to follow.

RobCrock, how busy was it? Did you have to venture far from the pistes to score fresh tracks? Did you hire a guide for any proper off-piste?
35cm overnight fresh. More snow due Wednesday onwards. Very cold. After such a long dry warm spell simply can't believe our luck that we booked our trip for next week...

not too busy at all and did not have to venture far , on the Monday to Wednesday in snow and flat light you could ski fresh snow anywhere even on piste as they couldn't piste everything, used the Slalom stadium next to the snow park in Val for major practice in deep (above the knee) , but heavy snow , then Thursday turned clear and cold overnight , snow conditions Thursday through to Saturday was fantastic , most places tracked out by Saturday. have to say though that Val and Le fornet seemed a lot quieter than Tignes. We did a great trip on Saturday , Le Fornet right down to Le Brevieres in less than 3 hours. Not sure how to post a picture on here but happy to send you a couple of photos by pm.

HD , and to show how quiet it was , we had time to get the Cascade lift back up and add some more tracks to the same earlier run before a couple of boarders added two trails of thier own , not quite the effect we were hoping for , but couldn't get the camera out quick enough. http://www.ski-finder.co.uk/photo/Val-D-Isere/111 , loads more photos , but none as stunning as these two.
