The secrets of Broken River, New Zealand

I'd not heard of this NZ ski area before I read this report from yesterday's Mayhem News.

The caption on the first photo is funny, and the text is quite amusing too. There's also a Kiwi word which I've not encountered before: "powdies".

Broken River - what a great name for a mountain! What does it mean?

More about it - here. Looks fantastic. Just 2 hours from where I used to live for 7 years (Christchurch). Wish I had somewhere like that near me now.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I guess 'broken river' is another way of saying 'lake'. NZ certainly seems to have a practical approach to running ski areas on a shoestring. Rope tows may be a pain to ride, but they must mean low ticket prices and - as the articles say - few people around.
