The All New 17/18 Weather Outlook Thread

It's certainly going to be interesting Sunday, Monday and Tuesday as to how much and to what level etc etc

I took this photo of the Serre Che pistes, and there's still a very good coverage up there, as I cycled up to the snow line on the South side on the Col de Granon road circa 2,150 so we could well be skinning up that lower piste if the weather is too bad, or we drive up to the Lautaret - decisions, decisions... Cool

Big bike ride for Tuesday now postponed Laughing

Oh well stand down - quite staggering how wrong the forecasts were in the end - snow line here looks like 2,000 and around 5-10cm from the looks of things - been spending quite a bit of time looking at the radar and really it's just been a lottery.

I could almost tempted to drive up to the Lautaret for a quick skin but that's currently covered in dense cloud whilst here we have sunshine rolling eyes

Still maybe a break later on hopefully

Wow.

What a season in the Northern Hemisphere.

Snow. Rain. Sun. Rain. More snow...

Zermatt expecting 100-200cm of snow up top this week. Engelberg around 50cm.

Val d'Isere will reopen in June on its non-glacier Winter slopes, for the first time in its 82-year history.

Pics from La Plagne and Val Despair this week.

Meteo France put together an interesting graph showing the hottest and coldest months (on average) since 1900 and then plotting them by decade

There seems to have been a tipping point around 1975/80 with the last decade having over 30 of the hottest months on record.

That chart is insane.

Shows succinctly why all the glaciers are melting and there was so much rain this season.

Watched the Giro today. The route was in Piemonte over the Colle de Finestre to Bardonecchia. The amount of snow lining the top roads was amazing. As was Froome’s Ride.
Roll on 2018/2019 and hope all is well with you and yours Nozawaonsen.

I'm going to Val Thorens in a couple of weeks for some reparations. Looking at the webcam I haven't seen this much snow still lying around at the end of May, certainly not in the last ten years

@davidof, prima facie, a very scary chart.

How good is the data though? And it seems to looking at only one dimension.

Not knocking it but would like to know more...

@nozawaonsen, what are you up to? Where you off to?

@under a new name, enjoying the sunshine in Austria. Mind you it’s been a bit wet at times recently as well. Just meant I’ll kick off the new thread in a week. Then go hiking in Tirol...

Looks like the new thread could start with some fresh snow on the peaks.

Great video shows how localised summer downpours can be.

Good article on the rapidly growing practice of snowfarming in the Alps.

Cover up big piles of old snow and use them the following early season.

Three Valleys in France using it alot.
