Resort recommendation for Jan or Feb 2019

 Poster: A snowHead

Hi All
We (me and Mrs OTR) are looking to make up a short list of possible destinations for a week's holiday next year. The plan will be to leave the off-piste gear at home (gnar will be later in the season)

I've skied a lot in Tignes/Val D'Isere, 3 valleys, Chamonix valley and Flaine

Looking for somewhere we haven't been before with a very extensive area, lots of pistes particulalry in red/black range - longish runs. Night life totally irrelevant. Happy to go with package or DIY, fully catered or eat out if local food not too expensive. Ski in/out preferred but not essential. We wouldn't mind going to France again but keen to try Italy or Austria for a change

One option could be Avoriaz as I've only skied there once before a long time ago but looking for other suggestions too

Low cost (within the context of the above requirements) would be a major factor

Thanks

Been to Avoriaz three times (and the other resorts you mention too). Excellent area. Ticks the boxes for long runs and some difficult ones (Swiss Wall Shocked ).

Not much in the way of chalets. Think Ski Total have some. Mainly DIY self-catering flats. I was with Clubmed x 3 but that has closed for refurb. Imagine you could do a very low cost if self catered as not too far from Geneva and stuff the ski bag with grub Smile

Saalbach or Champoluc?

@On the rocks, Have you done Les Arcs. It meets all your critria, but I'd be suprised if you haven't skied there before - lots.

For Austria, maybe Gerlos, lots of red pistes and a few blacks.
Some of the Hotels and apartments are 'ski to door'.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Ischgl. Large resort, decent long runs, some challenging pistes - and lots of lift-served side-of-piste if you fancy it.

It does have banging apres but you can ignore/avoid that. Low cost could be the only sticking point but you could stay in somewhere like Galtur which is cheaper.

You might find Saalbach a bit too easy.

Arlberg, though cost might be an issue. You can find reasonable places in or near to St Anton, Lech / Zrs more expensive. The skiing is as good / better than anywhere else.

Arabba is light on black runs even fewer long black runs.

Great for cruisy blues and reds
