Total knee replacement surgery

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I am going for a total knee replacement in 3 weeks. My question is has anyone had this done and been able to ski afterwards, also what was your rehabilitation time. Has anyone ever used a kneehab? If so did it shorten recovery time?

I would love to go on the ESOB which would be 19 weeks from operation day, I suppose it would be too optimistic to make that trip.

perelytik1, I'm using kneehab right now after losing lots of muscle after breaking my tibial plaeau. I wish I'd done it months ago, although no medical person in the UK said it did any good (my Austrian surgeon recommended it). I'm using it to try and fire up the VMO and after a few weeks I can feel a little flutter. Batman_123 also used it for the same reason and reported it a success.

perelytik1, you're skiing is likely to improve, if the experience of multiple friends and clients of mine is any indication. From an elite instructor (Weems Westfeldt) to multiple 50+ skiers in the Copper OHG program, the response has been universally, "I wish I had done this years ago." And "my skiing is so much better and pain free!"

perelytik1,

I have many patients who ski after knee replacement. I have done knee replacement in a few specifically so they can ski. Some ski to quite a good level. I'm sure if you ski hard you may still get some discomfort, but considerably less than Preop.

People who have had knee a replacement say that the knee can continue to improve or upto a year, even 18 months. That said I did once get a picture sent to me by one of my patients who was clearly skiing at 8 weeks! Realistically I think you would be best to think about gentle skiing at 4 to 6 months .

I consider knee replacement to be an operation to allow individuals to regain the freedom to return to exercise ( as opposed to some who feel it is to regain the freedom to collect your pension whilst in less pain) . Not all surgeons share my view, getting very exercised themselves about wearing it out. I tend not to try and dictate what individuals can do post knee replacement as they will soon work what it is and isn't up to.

Rehab is critical, so don't neglect it and continue for at least 6 months .

Hi thanks for all your replies, it has given me plenty of thought.Very reassuring after reading plenty of horror stories. According to people I have been talking to my specialist has a very good reputation and practises in rapid recovery program.

Been to pre op physiotherapist and she said that I might be able to do gentle skiing. At least I have a goal to aim for come on ESOB.

I have researched the kneehab and I can't afford it, is there a cheaper alternative? Smile Smile

perelytik1,

Kneehab a nice to have but not essential for knee replacement. Hard work is cheaper.
Good luck with it .

perelytik1, good luck. Looking forward to progress reports. BTW while I am using kneehab it is supplementing hard work. 4 or 5 hard sessions at the gym per week and a badass physio. I skied at Hemel the other week 4.5 months after being on crutches for 3 months. ....and I'm off to val d'isere on Thursday Very Happy

Had the operation on Thursday and all went well got back home on Sunday. Quite a bit of pain for 2 days, but is now subsiding. I already have 96% knee bend which I am pleased about.

I bought a Neruotech EMS machine and it seems to be doing the job along with my exercises. Still working towards the ESOB in VT, you never know, cold always hire a Ski Mojo. Very Happy Very Happy

"Once again hats off to Admin for a brillant ski test and all the suppliers at Chillfactor, most enjoyabel evening. I now know that I can ski with my new knee roll on the season"

@perelytik1,
I have done large numbers of knee replacements for people who wish to ski.

I would expect my patients who want to ski to be able to.

Should be a problem

Good luck

@RUGBY PETER,
How did you get on?
At three weeks post knee replacement focus on getting swelling down with regular ice. Itís very important to get the knee straight. You should have at least 90 degrees of bend. Hopefully off the crutches in the next week or so.

Are all knee prostheses created equal - or are some types better than others for skiing?

@Jonathan Bell, Thanks for asking - op went well and doing well. Following all the tips and advice you have given in recent years. Bought a Cryocuff and ice and elevate every day. Have got a straight knee and about 75 degrees of bend.
Iím 60, had a patellectomy at 23 (football) and lateral menisectomy at 25(rugby). Havenít seen a straight knee for 6/7 years and also developed 20 degree valgus - which has also been rectified.
A PS joint was fitted.
Crutches will give way to walking sticks very soon I think.
Iím delighted with the outcome so far - long way to go I know but going well.
Very Happy Very Happy snowHead

@RUGBY PETER,
If you are struggling with the bend itís very important to get the physio to see you regularly.

@Cygnet,
There is a little difference between different models/ manufacturers of knee replacement. It is probably not as important as who does the knee replacement .
Some are slower to loosen.
Others have a higher proportion of patients who feel the knee is good enough to forget about it.
