Swiss Village evacuated as melting glacier collapses

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Almost 200 people were moved out of their homes in the village of Saas-Grund near Saas-Fee, see http://www.planetski.eu/news/9499

Scientists believed the glacier above the village was in danger of collapse following a warm summer. The lower part of the glacier collapsed as predicted earlier today (Sunday).

The whole ski area is bowl in the mountain which catches the sun all day, so takes the full impact of any warming.

When the glaciers were still advancing, maybe 30 years ago, tongue collapses would be a regular occurrence, but now its a case of the the glaciers falling apart.

I've skied up there many times, the on piste isn't that good, as its usually artificial snow and full of pin balling school children, but its often and option when Sass-Fee is closed due to poor weather. The off-piste is can actually be pretty good, with good vertical, potentially all the way down to the valley floor.

@Alastair Pink, blimey, I was just there a couple of days ago... we went up to the Almageller Hütte with the intent of summitting the Weissmies the following day, and descending via the normal route down to Hohsaas over the Trift glacier. The hut guardians were advising everyone that the seracs were unstable and that the decent via that route was too dangerous. They weren't kidding! We did the much longer route returning the same way we came and down to Saas Almagel instead. Most of those staying in the hut that night had the same plan as us and about a third went through with it anyway Shocked
