Merry Christmas everyone!

We have flights booked to GVA next week (1-5 January) ... 2 adults and 2 young boys who are very comfortable on reds.

We are looking at either Champoluc or Gressoney - any thoughts / hotel recommendations?

I'm assuming that the snow is relatively decent here at the moment.

Thanks!

What kind of place are you looking for?

We stayed at the Hotel Castor which I'd recommend. Not too pricey, good food, nice bar. Only downside is it's not that close to the lifts.

Champoluc is a livelier village as there is not a great deal going on in either Gressoneys. Better restaurants I suspect in Champoluc as well.

@kitenski,

Without fail we tend to go to the favour big resorts such a Val, Zermatt, Whistler etc ... but this is a last minute trip (we already have 2 more booked this season) so we've decided to visit a smaller area that still gives access to some decent skiing / boarding ...

Not looking for a fancy hotel - a nice B+B able to accommodate 2 adults and 2 young kids under 10 fits the bill 100%.

I've emailed the Castor (thanks for the recommendation) - just what we need!

Thanks

Thanks very much everyone - Castor full but I think the Gletscher in Gressoney might just be able to accommodate us.

One more question - we will hire a car from GVA, I presume they come with winter tyres fitted? And do we need to carry chains when driving through Italy?

Thanks

If Swiss side yes to winter tyres and you are unlikely to need chains.

@under a new name,

Is it compulsory to carry chains in Italy during winter?

And is the drive up to Gressoney relatively straightforward?

Thanks

@franga, drive to gressoney is straight forward but narrow roads which could get tricky in heavy snow id reckon.

 And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

No particular snow showing on my fave forecasting site so I am thinking chains not necessary.

 So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much
