Copper Mountain, Colorado, began blowing snow today, the first week of October.
It is the first major resort to get going.

Does anyone else find this race to be the first and the what seems to be inexplicit use of cannons, from an envirmomental stand point to be somewhat worrying!?

A few years ago I was in Boston at the beginning of October. There was a cold snap and the TV news was full of stories of Killington being the first to open, accompanied by pictures of snowboarders hitting a couple of kickers and making some nice tracks on piste, against the backdrop of snow-laden trees. I was on a bit of a driving holiday around New England so thought that heading up to Killington would be good, if not to ski at least to enjoy the snow. When I got there I discovered that they had been running the snow cannons at the top of the main peak flat out for a few days, and had made enough snow to cover the first 200m of the piste, and blast some trees on one side to make them look snowy. The resort was open, for mountainbikers and walkers. I often wonder when I see stories from US resorts being "the first to open" just what is meant by "open".

Whitegold, can you shrink the pics please?
rob@rar, the Colorado resorts do seem to do a proper opening, with at least one top to bottom run open......I've skied opening day there many years ago....and also very early season in Killington where they did have a surprisingly decent amount of skiing available....

If the East gets early storms then it's great.
I've skied Jay Peak and Mad River Glen (both in Vermont) top to bottom at the end of October before they started spinning the lifts.

what dont you get
I'm uncomfortable with the mass use of snow cannons, for what is really nothing more than a marketing excercise to claim the "1st" badge.

It also means aliens will know where to come and ski, because they'll be able to see that photo from space.

As somebody said earlier, "You can't say it's open if I can throw a baseball from the top of the run to the bottom"

For the eastern US resorts its basically a test of the systems and to get some free publicity.
And it usually works to get these places on the morning shows and the weather channel.
If they open its usually not to stay open since there is always a warmup.
On the other hand, the CO resorts are actually trying to open since they have elevation that can hold the snow.
As for being "green"...don't a lot of you fly to ski for holiday?
I don't know many who bike to the slopes.

After about 30cm of snow in late October, followed by a week of mild temps, the freezing level has gone down again, as a Low pressure comes in off the North Pacific.

Should stay cool with a bit of precip in the Cascades off and on for the next 7 days. Looking out toward Nov. 12 and 13th could be a chance for some decent acumulation.
