New lift planned. I am still trying to work out exactly what this means. 1.2k of new slopes doesn't sound worthwhile. So seems to be an access lift. @SaraJ, any ideas?

Looking at the two surveys 2017 vs 2016) the numbers look like they are comparing apples vs pears. Apparently the cost of holiday has reduced in Mayrhofen from GBP1,509 to GBP 499. Selva from GBP 1, 549 to GBP 495 Also using a rate from sept 16 versus oct 17. Difficult to make any conclusions based on the data they are using since they seem to have changed the price benchmarks or number of people it relates to.

@SaraJ, I didn't realise that, how could I have missed it! Is it worth it? Is there much additional access versus lift served off piste? I have a few trips to the valley planned. Long weekend in Nov with family. Will spend 3 days up at glacier but staying in Mayrhofen. Week over NY in Mayrhofen. Long weekend in Jan with work but staying at Achenkirch. Will probably ski Kaltenbach Week in March - Mayrhofen Other weekends where possible! Plus maybe Snowbombing.

With another season around the corner I thought it was time to open a new Zillertal thread. A peak at the webcams shows a light snow covering today across the valley and Hintertux is showing 31km open. I noticed that Hochfugen is planing to host cat skiing this year. http://www.hochfuegenski.com/en/metanavi/media-center/saison-16-17/cat-skiing/

If you really wanted to get out of the valley and use your Tyrol pass during the stay, you could hire a car for a day. The owner of the petrol station (IQ Tankstelle it's called I think) at the lower end of the town has a section of cars to hire by the day. For 4 people works out quite cheap especially versus taxi both ways.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@aska_kar, stay in Mayrhofen if you would like varied nightlife. The other towns/villages are much smaller and you wouldn't have much choice or get a bit bored over 4 weeks. As others have said, transport is easy and mainly free and getting to the different areas is fairly easy.

@sbooker, it depends what you mean by apres. Given the Austrian apres starts after lunch/end of day skiing and often finishes early evening when people go back to hotel for food, it's perfectly acceptable for kids to be around. Only problem is that some bars are very smokey. We normally find a venue that we can outside if possible.

@manicpb, it's interesting on the TO front. I wonder if by booking independently you are actually fixing the increased cost now whereas a sensible TO would have hedged the rate risk so maybe the consumer is not wearing all the rate cost now?

@Hils68, I was forced to make the big switch last year due to injury which restricted my boarding for at least 12 months. My wife is a good skier and I wanted to get up the curve quickly (last skied 20 years ago) so went for 8 hours of one on one over two days. Looking back I am so glad I went for this option. It was expensive but provided the dedicated tuition I needed so that I could get to a reasonable standard of piste skiing to at least ski with my wife for the remainder of the holiday. I am not sure how quickly you can progress in ski school (depends on class size) in one week. We had friends in the resort so she didn't have to ski alone but I think she would have got lessons herself had friends not been around.

@achilles, it depends if exporters can turn it to their benefit and the benefit is not eroded by trade tax. Further it would depend if BoE sees too much inflation risk and raises rates. This would hit poor people disproportionately. Non conforming / sub prime lenders are already reporting higher arrears recently. Next will be credit card cos. So high or low valued pound has pros and cons for economy in my view. But for my holidays Brexit instability makes it more expensive so far.

@under a new name, there are a few [snow]heads stuck in the sand around here. Faith in Maybot and Boris "pants on fire", leads to blindness (or is it the other way round...). Clear indication that when Maybot and co fart the markets move. Markets currently (IMHO) think the status quo will continue for a while yet so reverting to 1.1+. Single market, EFTA etc has a way to go. If May says Brexit is hard Brexit I would expect the markets to drop. This makes your holiday money more expensive. If she agrees to soft Brexit then I expect pound to jump.
You know it makes sense.

@PaulC1984, I think what Clarky is saying is that all else being equal the exchange rate drop will end up costing you more whilst away in Europe. Yes you can change your plans to make up for the drop (eat out less, go to a different place etc) but the point still stands. Life in Europe is more expensive now for people earning pounds. Once you add in any cost inflation for the goods you want to buy then it's even more expensive (today). Rates go up and down of course.

@staffsan, I feel 6 days is quite a lot unless the ski routes are open and you can ski down to Sommerberg. I am taking the family for three days in Nov which I felt was about right. But to be honest it does depend on what you like. The terrain is quite varied and good steep sections. Fantastic park if that is your thing too. I believe there is more km of piste than somewhere like Kappl for example (although to contradict myself I did ski here for 6 days before....). One issue (which always worries me for shorter trips) is it's all well above the tree line so you could spend a few days in a the clouds. But then you are in the hands of the weather gods! :D For early season I think it's the best place. But haven't spent much time at Stubai which I understand is also good. Suggest you open another thread, rather than use the weather thread here.

I was chatting to the guys in Intersport a couple of weeks a go and they mentioned that new snow cannons and pipes were being installed at the back of the Rastkogel lift for a new piste. I have looked everywhere for details but couldn't find any info. So either I have the location wrong or misunderstood. Has anyone seen or heard anything on this? Not sure if it's s future project that would also require a new lift.
